Watching the news on WGN and there have been 2 tornado's touchdowns in northern Illinois near Belvidere/Rockford. Looks like there could be property damage in Rochelle, IL.
Heading east towards McHenry county now. 20 fire departments are now involved with rescue units to the area.

At 11pm there is a reported death in Rochelle, IL ....
Being a little east of there felt a lot of the effects of the tornado...
Plus major hail... Currently HIGH winds.....
O'Hare has over 700 flight cancellations.....

Not being from the USA ,How does the mid west always get battered by tornadoes , does it sit between a high an low pressure zone , , I remember the one in Joplin Missouri is that not far from Illinois ,

Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the humidity that goes with that, slams into the drier, cooler air from the North. As the jet stream moves about, the tornado season is a bit different in parts of the country as the year progresses. Later in the year, the threat moves further East and North.

And not all tornados are created equal. As Patrick says they're different in different parts of the country. I remember watching tornados in CO and admiring the storm. You'd never do that in say ND, MO, OK, KS, NE. I recall once pick up my wife at DIA from her return from Blighty and watching one come down out of the clouds. I remembered it was odd that the announcements didn't come out in the airport until it had dissipated. Turned out to be an F1, a dust devil really.

As far as I know ,We don't have tornadoes in the UK ,We have hurricanes the strongest wind was a couple years ago over 100mph the was scary ,I think some of those tornadoes reach 200 I wouldn't like to be near them jeez .

I just drove 13 hours from Baltimore to just about Chicago and the weather was wicked during the entire trip.
