If o get the smaller style torque converter would i need a different starter?

No all converters that fit a particular trans, 904/727 come with a ring gear that works with corporate starter.

See how they keep the ring gear the same diameter regardless of the diameter of the torque converter?

You will need a smaller flex plate when going smaller unless you has a B&M solid flex plate with multiple holes.
