I used to consider myself somewhat of a mechanic. After working on this Plymouth for the past few months and repeatedly getting my *** kicked by simple, straightforward things I've done a thousand times I'm ready to.... I'm starting to wonder if this car hates me lol! Well the problem I'm having this time is the trans pan gasket. The fsm states the pan bolts should of be torqued to 150 inch pounds . I can't even get it 100 with out the gasket completely squishing out. Literally the entire corner from inside to out is squishing out at 100 inch/lbs. What am I doing wrong here?

Are you confusing inch lbs. and foot lbs., which would be typical of a standard torque wrench? 150 inch lbs.= 12.5 foot lbs.

I wish it were that! I'm using a 1/4" drive torque wrench and the fsm states inch/lbs. I believe Stan is correct! In 67 they would have used a cork gasket that is thicker than the cheap rubber one that came with my filter kit.

A while back, someone posted a proper rubber trans gasket but I can't find the thread. Stan, I think it was you.

When I used the cheap rubber one, the same thing happened to me. The gasket simply squeezed out of the edges. Piece of garbage.

Go to a Dodge/Chrysler dealer and get the newer style reuseable pan gasket. The number for the 727 (or A-518/46RH/46RE) is: 2464324AC. It is hard nylon over steel with molded in double sealing beads. Be careful not to overtorque it, or you can strip the case threads because it doesn't compress the same as a cork or rubber gasket.

I'll be heading there tomorrow! Thanks Stan! And everyone else!

Any idea if this will fit the '65 727?

Thanks Zymurgy . I'm not sure what year the guts or the case are. I know we had to grind some of the inner case so that the valve body would sit flush. That tells me older guts with a new case.

maybe a dumb question but do you have to use longer bolts with this gasket as it is thicker. I bought one when this was posted before but haven't changed it yet as there are other leaks I am trying to track down. It looks like the selector shaft seal and dip stick are also leaking got to get it up on stands to check it.

With it leaking all over the place like that I would be thinking of pulling the whole unit.
