Transmission leaking when car is jacked up from front

Hey guys,

I have a '65 Newport 383 with a A727 TF. I just had the TF rebuilt about 2 months ago at a local shop. When I jack the car up from the front the tranny leaks, I think it is coming from the shaft. Any thoughts or ideas of what it could be?

There is a somewhat flexible seal that the driveshaft slip yoke slides in and out of. Insude the tail housing is also a bronze bushing the slip yoke turns in. When the bushing wears, the outer seal wears, too, and leaks as a result.

Usually, there's not much need for lube in the tailshaft housing. Just the speedo gears and that bushing back there. BUT with the car body angled as you do, and all of the oil has drained out of the torque converter, then a bit too much oil can be back there.

When and if you remove the driveshaft, check for a "wear area" on the slip yoke, from its contact with the rear seal(s). Check to ensure the atf level is correct when the motor is hot and well into operating temp (after driving for about 10 miles).

Address your concerns to the trans rebuilder and see what they say.

I don't have a '65 FSM, but if I remember correctly, The front u-joint was the ball and trunnion type and if so there would be no slip yoke and associated bushing. In '66 the slip yoke was open ended and had a seal on the inside as well as the outside. So the question is, "what 727 TF is installed?" Lindsay
 
Maybe they forgot the tail shaft seal, or it damaged putting the driveshafts in.

Only the manual trans in a '65 Chrysler had the ball and trunnion.

This car will have a slip yoke with a single front U-joint. Some '65 cars will have a double front U-joint, but still have the slip yoke.

I do see the orange lip of the seal. I'll have to get a better look when I jack it up next to confirm where the leak is coming from. It does leak quite a bit when I have the front jacked up.

I went back to the shop that did the rebuild to address another leak that was coming from the pan last week. I told about the leak and he said that there is some plug up top that gets worn over time and I could just put some sealant on it. He didn't seem to concern about it‍. Should I be more concerned? It does not seem to be leaking when the car is on the ground.
