Looked at a 66 SPORT Fury that's for sale, and the S.S. V.I.N. tag located on the door hinge pillar post is missing. Question is the vin stamped anywhere else on a C-body ? Coincidentally I found a state registration card right on the passenger seat with the vin. on it. But that will never fly with a state inspection, without the tag in place, so my only option is to purchase for parts, and part, too bad it has factory A/C and factory 4-track tape player.

You might take that paperwork and the car itself to the DMV and see what they can do. They could always give the car a state-assigned VIN, which is perfectly legal; but it will not be the VIN that was on the car to start with.

The SO number IS stamped on the radiator cowl and a couple of other places. If your fender tag is on the car, that MIGHT help you in saying to them "this number is stamped here and on the tag" to show them there are numbers on the car, just not the VIN. Look all over hell on the car itself for that VIN tag, if you haven't already!!! It might be hiding under the carpet or dash, in the glove box, or in some hidden crevice somewhere...even the trunk extensions!

The broadcast sheet will have both the SO and the VIN that will put the two together.

Long shot.....

since it is a '66, Chrysler Historical MAY have the IBM card on file. You might be able to narrow down the VIN range by checking date codes, plant where built, paint and trim codes and at least give them a chance to find the IBM card for the car. I don't know if they can search by the SO number. IF this was all possible, then you would have a factory document that ties the SO number to the VIN and may have a chance to get a new state issued VIN tag.

I don't know about Colorado, but in Nebraska the state may issue one, but if anyone from the past shows up with a title within 3 years,, you will lose that car to the previous owner. That includes all the Improvements.

Thanks fella's for all the excellent info, and suggestions. It does have the fender tag in place, he is gonna let me know this week if he will accept my offer. Apologize for the delay but ben busy with home improvements, and car shows, since I got my "big-girl" up n running, and it's becoming clear why discerning people who appreciate, a big, beautiful, responsive ride, are so dedicated to these beautiful automobiles....Will keep you posted.
