I’m interested in purchasing a 4 door 71 New Yorker 440 near me. In very good condition, little rust, new carb, brakes, fuel tank and pump. 90k original miles. Guy is asking $4500. Is this worth it? It seems like a good price to me. I’m looking for something to toy around with my son. Any opinions? I’m no mechanic by the way.

Do your research on line. Find a local facility/mechanic who can check the car over for a fee. You need to trust them as if they will be maintaining it for you. Is there any local car club and/or appraisal person to check it over.

Do what Pete said, find a trust worthy mechanic. You will inevitably need to gain a few mechanical skills.
