What is this knob for

Have this knob by the windshield on a 72 New Yorker what is it for

I think it might have to do with headlight system, does yours have the sentinel system?

It’s the dusk to dawn photo-cell for the headlight sentinel system.

Thats what I was thinking, we that on one of our 68 300's years back.

Yes, if the system works it is like todays “automatic” system. Also leaves the headlights on for a minute or 2 after you park it.

its a headlight hi/low beam changer/dimmer

You adjust it to have your automatic lights turn on sooner or later at dusk or rising sun. The automatic dimmer is a black box looking out from behind grill on my Imperial.
