I'm having trouble finding any of the threads I looked at last year on this forum regarding headers. I want to do headers on my '67 4 door VIP (383), and someone said the B & E body shortys (part # 78070 I think) from Hedman would work, but I want to hear from you folks on what you've done for exhaust on your c-bodies, and what clearance issues you ran into. I emailed the Tech Support guys at Hedman and the guy who responded said they hadn't developed one for the C-Body yet... I've also seen a post or two about TTI exhaust? Not familiar with TTI at all. Help me make a firm decision here.

Factory high performance manifolds work wonderful......So you don't have to play games with the starter, gaskets blowing out , collectors rotting out, and no where near the amount of heat expelled from them .... plus its a VIP, it should be quiet.... :-D

If I had to choose I would score a pair of factory hi-po logs instead of headers. Flow just about as well as any headers for your app (and look cooler IMO), plus what previous said about leaking, heat, and fit issues....PITA.

Go ask heyoldguy they only picked up 7 hp over the stock 1964 log manifolds with the hp exh manifolds. That's a lot of money for 7 hp considering they are more money than headers.

Im not looking to make trouble, but Ive never paid more that $100.00 for C body high performance manifolds. Ive bought and used headers... they have their plusses for sure, but Headers cost alot more than manifolds do.... Im certainly not telling the 67 VIP person what to do, I just made a friendly suggestion...

I have never seen any hp manifolds for less than 250 . I find it interesting that he has actual dyno proof that might as well keep low po logs that are already on there.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'm that one strange person who wants a VIP to be loud. I have a cracked manifold, or I wouldn't give a darn about replacing them. I'm broke, or this would be solved already. I looked for hp manifolds & couldn't find them for less than $600/pair. I suppose I could look again, but I thought headers would be fun...

I go to local swap meets , junk yards etc maybe Im lucky? IDK. I have a pair waiting for me to pick up in Wisconsin for a hundred bucks.....

Here are some it took me to find in minutes

While this is good info cross reference with the attached link to confirm fit with Cbodies particularly with the right side.

The B-body Hedman header was once advertized as working in a C-body with a warning of possible clearance issues with column shift linkage.

It took 9 hours with a port-a power and breaking a set of jaws to get this 440 in, when it should have taken an hour. The shift linkage was not an issue, however the fact that the C-body A-arms are much larger and the torsion bars being closer together are huge issues that make them incompatable. With much frustration, work and swearing they did fit, but they will still rub the passenger side torsion bar under torque. I will be putting the stroker back in with $850 polished TTIs.

Just another opinion .. I'm with the Magnum exhaust manifold crowd if you are looking to make some power over stock by raising the compression and a stock HP cam and aftermarket intake and carb ... if not just run the logs and duals.

Headers make more power than Magnums and Magnums make more power than logs, but the margins are not huge on what you will probably be doing or the RPMs you will be using the car at 99% of the time (my guess). Meaning you will not be racing nor above 3K RPM most of the time which is where most of the power of headers come into play by helping clear the gasses for breathing.

Magnums look cooler thanks logs, and like logs fit like they are supposed to .. I almost always run them instead of headers on mildly hopped up 383 and 440 HP engines because the gain of headers for the dollar on a stock or mild engines is not worth the $$ and headache to me

JMHO

If you are set on getting headers the ceramic coated headers lower the underhood temps further improving efficiency and power.

Ah, that's exactly the frustration I'm trying to avoid. Beautiful by the way! I hear TTI is the best way to go.

Tallhair, thanks for the input. I do insist on headers, simply because I'm a sucker for pretty pipes. I put an Edelbrock 4 barrel & performer intake on it when the itty bitty stock carb gave up on me, but I haven't opened up the engine. Not in full build territory yet... still in Bolt-on land. I know headers are built for big power engines, but I plan to make more power later. We'll see what I come up with. Not in a huge hurry because it's not my daily driver anymore. :)

Chrome don't get ya home.
Hi! Long time no see! I'm not big on chrome either... Black headers would be just fine. :) I was hoping this would be easy, but I did buy a C-Body. Just trying to order the right drums and wheel studs has my head spinning. 2-3/4? 3? Budd? Kelsey-Hayes? Neither? Heavy Duty? Haha! I almost want to order them all & see what fits...

That's cool too. I'd recommend getting the coated inside and out headers. Can cool engine bay by 100 degrees over stock iron and they'll look good, won't rust, and last a long time.
