Can an expert tell me which motor is in these pics? Not sure if 318 or 383.

Well, it looks like a fuselage vehicle, and with the distributor at the front of the engine it would be a 383 (2 bbl if the air cleaner is stock). It could also be a standard 440 if that is also an option for that car. A 318 would have the distributor at the rear of the engine, adjacent to the firewall.

Thanks. Probably the 383 because it's not the GT, unless you could get the 440 on a different trim

The KEY thing is where the distributor is located. Another is the shape of the valve covers, which also indicate B/RB engine from about '65 forward (extra bolt on the lower end corners not there on the earlier engines, which were 4-bolt valve covers ala small block Chevy).

The 440+6 was unique to the GT, but the normal 440 4bbl was not, although it was standard in the GT. As I recall.

I spy a disc brake booster.

383 or 440 both were available. It should have 440 stamped on a little machined pad near the distributor if it is one.

Russ: I doubt he'll able to see what is stamped on that pad under the A/C compressor. If he looks at the driver's side of the engine block and sees a casting number that ends in "430", it is a 440. Here is a primer on Mopar casting numbers: Mopar Engine Casting Numbers

What's on the fender tag, and what is the letter in the fifth digit location in the VIN? If it's the factory motor, those will tell you.

I haven't ever seen a 1970 or 71 Sport fury with a factory 440 in it if it wasn't a GT or a police package.

But it was technically available was it not? Likely for the same $ as upgrading to the GT pkg hence the unlikely choice... just asking, as I don't know for certain.. .

As I recall, 440s were always available in Plymouth, Dodge, and Chrysler C-body cars/wagons from 1966 on. 413s before that. Which greatly pre-dates the Sport Fury GT by many years. Of course, New Yorkers had the 440/350 as standard (413/340 before the 440s came out).

The 383 2bbl was far more popular back then (318 2bbl was the "standard V-8 , then the 383 4bbl for added power, and the 440/375 for more power and torque. Many local and state law enforcement entities used the 383 4bbls as a good balance between power and operating costs. If they felt they needed 440s, they got them.
