While on my trip, I had the opportunity to learn a bit about the engines in the cruise ship. There are 4 16 cylinder diesels driving the generators, each one with a displacement of 1542 litres (just over 94,000 ci), producing 26,000 HP @ 600RPM, and weighing in at 250 tons. If run under full load each one will consume 125,000 gallons per day of marine or light diesel fuel (86 gallons per minute). Normal operation is two units, sometimes three, and not at full load. The fuel storage on board is 7 million gallons, so that's $15,000,000 or more to fill-up from empty. The props are all driven by electric motors, the 2 main ones being 23,000 HP maximum.

Wow! Imagine how many average towns those generators would light up

So which is the bigger waste.... cruise ships or Airplanes?

My 69 sport Fury got just over 7 miles to the Gallon....I thought that was bad
