1976 AMC Pacer X. Nice car .$7500. I will not answer alot of stupid questions...

I don't know a lot about Pacers, but I know they come with a "no honk guarantee".

My first wife had one one when we got married, always ran well but kind of sluggish and not good milage. I finally checked the compression, found the 5 & 6 cylinders had no compression. I though head gasket, pulled the head and those two pistons stopped about a 3/16 - 1/4 inch short of the top of the block. Strange but true, had to pull the engine, put in the correct rods and it was so much better after that.

I never verified, but my buddy had a 76’ and he said the trans was a 727 torqflite

Big door, little door, I'm in my fish bowl looking out at the world.
I believe they used the 904 in them, mileage was something they promoted with the car, a 727 behind a 4/6 cylinder was not getting good mpg.

More than likely a 904, but yes, from '72 onward AMC used Chrysler transmissions if an automatic. Starter was on the passenger side though, so they are not a source to replace one on a Mopar.

Here's my 1978 Sport package Pacer with optional 304 V8. Powder blue over captain blue metallic. 304 V8s came with 998 Chrysler transmissions. AMC called them Torque-Command transmissions. Six cylinders came with 904 transmissions. 360 & 401 came with 727.

360 & 401 came with 727.
Not all of them. I saw an Ambassador in a junkyard with a 360; the transmission was a 904. I wanted to buy the motor but the guy would not separate them. It was after that that I found the 401 in another yard.

Here it is after the machine work and our reassembly. I used the original intake to lower the motor into the Gremlin. Didn't want to damage the aluminum intake we installed later.

Once it was in we put the intake on.
