Chrysler-Badged Formal Police Cars

Didn't the New Jersey State Police use Newports in 1974 or 1975. They were limited to the N.J. Turnpike. I remember taking notice because they were different from their standard units.

1979 to 1981 Chrysler Newport were introduced in a Police package. They were R bodies, and available with 225, 318, and 360 engines. In 1979 through 1981 the Dodge St. Regis had a
Police package; 1980 / 1981 Plymouth introduced the Gran Fury. They were nice enough, but dreadfully slow.

Thats entirely possible. Someone else within this thread mentioned that too but so far we have not been able to produce/find any pictures of NJ police use.

And any remaining examples just arent turning up yet either. Somebody saw one in fire department use, another one was seen in government use .. but then again cant confirm they were A38 cars or just regular civi cars.

we'll keep lookin i guess.

The certified speedo is an interesting discussion point for the Chrysler Formal. I think that may be a red herring as a means of easily identifying one.
I have only seen 120 mph speedos (74 only) and then 100 mph (75-78) sspeedos. Never a 140 like the P & D pursuits/ patrols got. I don't think they made a 140 mph Formal Chrysler cluster (they are different).
Has anyone seen one? Even in the brochures?

I have not.
i would assume that regardless of top speed, they all would be labeled Certified.

I removed a Certified-labeled speedo from a 2dr Newport at a Detroit area junkyard, circa 1997. Do not recall drivetrain on Newport, but it was not a base trim level. I installed it in my '77 NYB. It fit physically, but the outer edges were hard to read because of the NYB's square bezel.

There is a slim possibilty that I have a photo. The speedo went with the car when I sold it... damnnit.

You may have "operated" on 'Bigfoot" (what we coined any Fusie/Formal Newport cop rig to be) and didn't know it. As A38 cars, second letter in VIN would likely have been "M" vs "K" giving it a trim upgrade.

Well if you don't find photos of the Newp, the search goes on.

Found this old thread.
For Sale - 1974-1977 Certified 140 MPH Police Speedometer
Odds are it's from a Monaco (or Fury) I guess.

And this shows what might be a problem for Newports.
The Fuel and Alternater guages were not with the speedometer on Newports and it's very unlikely Mopar would come up with a speedometer and instrument panels for only a few Newport cop cars.

At best I would only have pics of the speedo in my NYB. I was actually there to grab a 1/4 window for a Rivera salvage-title I was rebuilding!

My speedo looked like a standard Newport, but said "certified". I cannot recall what it read to? I'll be looking through photos soon due to the death of a family member, I'll look for a pic.

I'm thinking they offered an oil gauge that went in the clock hole, as on police Fury/Polaras the gen earlier.

remember, the 1974 C-body (Fury/Monaco) cop speedos had the "funny" numbers.

and something i read (think its in the Sanow book) said the Formal-era Newp squads got a 120 mph speedo in the A38 package. May have been same for fusies but dunno.

Here's a golden oldie for amusement.
A38 package 74 Chrysler Newport.
Well, lookee here...

"1976 was the only year... "

So we narrow down the hunt for samsquatch to 1976 Newports only.
One more tiny piece of the puzzle.

You've been busy! :) Nice sleuthin!

the 2012 thread pre-dates my membership. one member, lemondana weighed in with his Missosuri fusie Newp in the other thread I started this year, and we've exchanged some PM's as he searches for his documentation. we havent connected yet on that tho.

another member in the older thread said this car was an A38 car, but no documentation is in the thread (not saying it is, or isnt .. but we'd like to confirm for sure).

Now, the WV Statie cars, the 73 and the 74. The Sanow book, and other sources (your new one talked about the formals) ALSO say Newp Fusie was '73 and formal was '76 only, respectively, for A38 offering, so what's this '74 up to?

Circumstantial evidence says it MUST jave been an A38 car yes? I'd bet a fleet could twist Chrysler's arm for a fusie/formal Newp anytime tho.

Anyway, the search area may have gotten smaller .. like the Southie's say: we're gonna bag that big, hairy "Bass-tid"! :)

Okay, the Chrysler certified speedo question bothered me so I dug into my Formal era parts catalogues (Yes I am a Formal lover).

Found 2 things:

1) The Chrysler Newport as a cop car was not confined to 76 as the certified speedo appears in the 75 book.
2) Part No 3593 135 (pencil is pointing them out)

I see that there were two Formal Certified speedometers.
One for the Plymouth and Dodge (3593051) and a different one for Chrysler (3593135).
Interesting.
Searching for 3593135 turned up ZERO results.
How freakin rare the Chrysler one must be!
:wideyed:

FWIW, 3593136 is the Chrysler 120mph speed.
3593134 has the Tailgate Ajar warning light.

Also...

Commando, the 359136 is not 120 mph...it is the 1975 100 mph Imperial unit moved over to the NYB (note the C-S under model). Yes, they had a different face (more square), hence the different part no. Interchangeable though. Go figure.
