I was having some trouble getting consistent dwell readings and discovered my distributor bushings to be worn out.
While waiting for parts I decided to disassemble it. After removing the roll pin for the spacer, I discovered 2 holes in the shaft.

Does this look right? Has someone else been here and drilled another hole? The pin was in the lower hole. The bushings are SHOT. I am replacing the bushings and going to install a Pertronix ignition.

Other than bushing wear, inconsistent dwell readings, as in lobe to lobe, can be the result of inconsistent wear on the lobes. Setting the point gap with a dial indicator will indicate this.

Just some thoughts,

Some one was in there before. When you change the bushings make sure you burnish them to lock them in to the case. Personally I would get another shaft. That is a weak point now.

I'd swap out that plastic collar for a steel one too. I used to find broken ones in oil pans of old engines.
