My 68 Fury didn't have the Plymouth letters on the trunk when I bought it. I purchased the letters but now how do I install them?
Even if I remove the tail lights from the trunk lid, no way I'm reaching in there to push the clips on.
Anyone have a good method?

Not saying they used barrel clips but when you don't have access barrel clips are typically used. There are different sizes and types, my local NAPA sells them.

Alan, Thanks. I'd have to drill the holes bigger to fit these clips.

The factory mounted them with sheet metal nuts that cut into the studs. That is the best way to attach them. Use a quarter inch drive ratchet with a long extension and you can get to most of them easily, but some are difficult. The reproduction letter “M“ usually do not have one of the pins in the proper location for a 68 Fury trunk lid, so you must either drill a hole, which is what I have done or you could cut the stud off and use implement adhesive and hope for the best. Take one of the letters with you to Napa and get the right size self threading nuts.Good luck.

On a 1968 Plymouth Fury the letters are held on by nut, which would be of the 'Speed Nut' variety but with a seal.

On mine, there is no hole for each letter/post, behind each letter to use a 3/8 ratchet.

What model Fury do you have? Fury I, Fury II, or Fury III? The letters are in different places between Fury I/II & Fury III.
That information would be helpful.

I only mention 3/8th's because that is what I used on the trunk letters as I don't think I've ever had any 1/4" deep drive sockets as IMHO 1/4" drives are for wimp's LOL
On that note using a 3/8th's doesn't mean you have to be a he-man with these sheet metal speed nuts, just choke up to the ratchet head and tighten the nut appropriately as you can strip out these nut as the aren't like a regular ISO threaded nut. Just snug it down and if you can't find the factory nut with the rubber seal some 'Blue Goo' or whatever favorite sealer you use would suffice.

I have 86 of them all used and perfect.


The letters were used from 1966 - 1978

I have lots of them used and the O, T, H NOS

Actually, I do have those holes. First glance I didn't think the holes lined up with the backside of the letters. The holes only kind of line up. And the holes in my trunk lid kinda look like yours, to me, almost like it was an after thought. Some holes have sharp edges like the we're drilled after the trunk lid was build and together.
But whatever, I found some Thread Cutting Nuts at lowes and they worked fine. One in the backside of the trunk lid was so off that I had to drill another hole.

Also, these letters are aftermarket with straight shafts/studs, no threads. So I bought the push on clips. Didn't even think of the thread cutting nuts.

I used those clips and 3M tape to hold the letters on my Newport.
