Nervous about seat re-upholstery

AZ,

My mom told me to go to college, and my dad told me to learn a trade...I did both! Got a degree in Environmental Science, and worked for the Ohio EPA a few years until Reagan cut the budget and so many of us lost our jobs. I then found work with a house framing crew, which morphed into a nearly 40-year career in the remodeling business. I did OK, and it was hard work the whole time, but I liked the independence.

Back then there were no Mexicans framing houses in central Ohio. None. It was all just regular American guys like me (white and some black, though the blacks mostly did the trowel trades and concrete work). We all worked together, it was great. But even then, I could see that with the computer age dawning, I was the last of a breed of American Joes working the building trade jobs. My son's generation (he's 35) had no interest in doing this type of physical, outdoor work. This is where the Mexican immigrants filled the labor void, framing houses, roofing, and doing drywall. As a remodeling contractor, I had customers who did not want Mexican guys doing the drywall work in their houses in the 1990s.

And at that time, the quality paradigm of those Mexican crews wasn't up to American standards...they were fast and cheap, but not that good. BUT, I knew even then that eventually they would have better quality, learn English, and assimilate into American culture, and take over the building trades. And that is what happened. The work I see those guys doing today is top-notch. Fast and good.

I used several Mexican sub-contractors for drywall and roofing and stucco, they were/are good hardworking gentlemen. Just like my Hungarian immigrant Great-Grandfather who came to Ohio in 1913 and built his life here. I guess times have changed, and though the current generation of Americans aren't much interested in the building trades, the immigrants have stepped in to fill that void, and that's a good thing as I see it.

Yep, friend has been doing it 30+ years, and now only deals with old customers he knows.

A good upholstery guy will get it right. I got mine done by a guy in Wixom Mi a couple of years ago and they came out great. It helped that my guy had a web site showing his skills to the world. I didn't worry about the vinyl grain, I just wanted the color and pattern as close as possible. Mine were under $2K and he had them done in two weeks.

AND HE PUT THE MEDALLIONS BACK ON THE SEAT BACKS!!!!! HOW REFRESHING. I can't stand when they go missing. Did you drill it into his head that you wanted them, or is he that good and observant? Splendid job.

I had a seat recovered in my F250 and the shop couldn’t get the embroidery done due to copyright issues. Sometimes that’s why it isn’t done.

most medallions are pot metal crap with little posts that break off easily and retaining fasteners that are equally fragile so trying to get them apart without damaging one of them is a PIA...and they're usually pitted and need to be rechromed...small wonder why they wind up missing

Huh? You must have misunderstood what I was referring to. It's the metal medallion parts that are removed from the old upholstery seat backs and then should get replaced onto the new upholstery. I am not sure where copyright regulations come into play. Most times the medallions get omitted during the reupholstery.

I was referring to the Lariat scripts that were on the headrest for the F250 that I have. I understand about transferring the medallions and you are correct about them often not being transferred.

He marked out where they go on the material, took that to a local place that does embroidery, and he put it all together. It was my idea to do it this way.

Just got my Interior back from a local guy I used locally. I was worried the guy would screw it up because he was more of a boat Interior guy. But he came through. I used all Legendary products and I'm very happy with the results. The quality of vinyl and the look is exact. I have to take some pics, but my Interior wasn't that bad...it was the foam. It was a mess I my car, so I had no choice.

The foam Legendary sent screwed him up because it's universal for 60 through 65, all bucket models. So you need to cut it to size. He didn't know that, but once we talked and I showed him a video from Legendary, it all came together.

It was pricey for the Interior and foam, but he was cheap. Unfortunately, no one does this work and anyone that does custom Interior, is a friggin' fortune. So either way, you're in a new Interior for 3k minium...but it's worth it. I can't wait to install everything next week.

Just going to muss the old car smell. Lol

That’s why I decided to learn to do my upholstery. As the quote I got about 8 years ago was around $4k to do it from scratch. I reverse engineered what I had, took my time and knocked it out. There were only 2 mostly hidden spots that I wished I did better, but unless you look for them it’s unlikely you’ll find them.
With new upholstery you get the combination of New Car smell and old car engine smell. No more mice smell, which is a good thing.
