Hi fellas,
So, I bit the bullet and bought a matching set of mirrors for my 69 Fury.As everybody said, the passenger side mirror didn't add much in terms of visibility, but the car looks more balanced, and I have a little bit more visibility than nothing. LOL

That being said, anytime somebody shuts the passenger side door, the mirror falls out of adjustment. is there a way without doing damage to tighten the mirror so it has more friction to stay in place inside the frame?

Thanks,

Yes, the piece of spring steel that causes the friction on a ball stud can be tightened. However, I am afraid there is no way to reach it other than first carefully removing (read: pry off with a plastic putty knife or spatula) the actual glass from the round metal base it is glued on. After tightening said friction element you need to re-glue the mirror glass.

The only good thing is you can do this with the mirror remaining installed in the door.

I actually have one apart right now to fix the exact problem you’re talking about. Unfortunately, there is no tension adjustment screw. The mirror holder is held in place over top of a round ball joint with a small piece of metal which is riveted to the mirror holder. If a person could put more pressure on the ball join that would solve the issue. I am thinking about putting a small machine screw through the tin piece into the mirror holder which would make it tighter on the ball joint. I will let you know how it goes.

So long as the machine screw is large enough, it will work. I did a similar thing to an interior mirror, with good result. Still using the mirror for that matter...

Sorry I didn't memorize this correctly. It's been a couple of years. I did exactly the same, drilled a small hole into the former stud/rivet which held the steel blade in place, then inserted a screw. That worked well and makes it adjustable then.

As far as visibility goes, the passenger mirror is usually not mounted in the same location as the driver side. I know it isn't on my 70 Duster which has a factory installed mirror. I believe this helps with having a better view.

@welderguy Were you able to remove the glass without breaking it? If so, how?

I heated the mirror with a heat gun and the glue holding it let go . I was willing to break the mirror though because replacement at a glass shop was $18. I’ve had other mirror glass like that replaced so I knew the cost just in case I broke it when removing it.

OK, so you had an alternative plan. Good going. Thank you.

I had exactly the same problem in my 69 Newport. Both the rear view mirror and the passenger side mirror would bounce around everywhere.... Maybe I am just lazy, but I set both in position for my height (I am the only driver), applied a few drops of super glue to each, and both mirrors have stayed in position for six months now, including at speeds of 80 plus miles.... Cost me about 50 cents and took 5 minutes...

Here is my cheat - fix for this issue. I adjust the mirror then slip one or two of these rubber shims in the joint between the glass and the exterior mirror case. They hold the mirror in place very well, can be removed or replaced. I trim them off so they are flush with the glass.

The rubber works well for keeping them stable with vibrations as well.
