is there a way to wire a 3 prong safety switch to work with a single wire switch using the single wire ?

The three terminal neutral safety switch actually contains the same function as the older single terminal switch, coupled with the reverse lights switch. The outer terminals are for the reverse lights switch and the central terminal is the connection to the neutral safety switch.

Connect to the center terminal only for the neutral safety function.

Note that the mechanical portion of the switch inside the transmission differs in the way it contacts the manual lever (aka rooster comb) between the earlier single terminal switches and the later three terminal switch.

Yes, assuming you have a 3-wire switch in a 3-wire transmission. The 3-wire switch will not work in a 1-wire transmission.
That being said, just hook up to the center wire.
