Old Man with a Hat
That shortage was a death toll for BB cars.
Yea in early 1974 I had a guy that wanted to trade me a 1969 GTX 4spd 440 6 Barrel straight up for my 1968 Fury III $100 DD that I just got. Now before you get excited, he had power slid it into a Chevy Vega and stoved in the quarter panel all the way from the door to taillight, even broke the 1/4 glass. He was drunk as hell and the Vega caught fire with the back hatch area full of Christmas presents. LOL I remember him telling me about how he had to go to the house with the Christmas party going on to get the people to call the Fire Department.
Don't know if any other cars were damage in the long line of parallel park cars as it was a big party right in his neighborhood. I think he did get charge with 1st offence drunk driving?
I went all the way out to the boonies to his fancy new apartment spawl complex on a cold lightly snowing day to test drive it. It was running real rough in the cold weather and the headers/exhaust were loud leaking and I couldn't really get on it and open it up with a bit of a drive to get to the interstate so it was just a short test drive. Shifted OK, and the clutch linkage was tight but when I opened the trunk and saw that the hit was so hard that the wheel tub was pushed over I made up my mind real quick. I told him that I needed another 6 BBL like a hole in the head. LOL
He was persistent, (being a car salesman) all he wanted to know about the Fury was if it had good heat, don't know about the heat in the GTX as we didn't get that far but with the plastic on the 1/4 window I don't imagine you could keep much heat in.
It's to bad I didn't hear about the car being sold before him as it was owned by the bigger brother of the person I got my 1st 68 PK21 from (Big Mopar family) in fact I work for him at his 4x4 truck/speed shop a decade later. The only other dealings I had with the older brother is when I first purchased the PK21 was when he gave me a Holley 3 BBL to try on my 440, I may have been a PITA as he didn't know where the manifold was, he thought his brother #1 took it to put on his Road Runner, said I'd pay him when I got the manifold (never happened) maybe that's why I never got a ride in his 67 HEMI GTX...
Friends in the late 80's would bug me as to why I didn't do the trade as Muscle Car prices were going up & up, I just said the repair, plus all the years storing it would add up to either a loss loss or break even situation. I had to refresh peoples memory about the Reggie Jackson Mopar fire loss constantly, plus I already had 2 77 PK41's to deal with and a 76 Bro'Ham.
