Yes, that is unfortunate news, but it sounds like you caught it early enough. Could be Rod bearings are going bad. If caught early enough will help with minimal machine work to correct.

The “pickup coil” on my 75 NYB started going bad and had the same symptoms as you described.. replaced the dizzy and no More issues..

A 4Dr /6 68 was my first car.. what a car it was, drive through high school, my dad sold it when I went to boot camp.. I wasn’t happy to say the least… Miss that car.

You’re gonna HAVE to remove the dash bezel. It’s ONE piece from the headlight switch to radio.. IF you end up breaking it, you have options to replace it.. Once off! It’s 2 hex head screws and a couple plug on the back.. and VWALA!! This pic is of my 77 with the bezel off.. the square hole you...

I agree with Mr. C, if it still has the thermoquad carb.. get rid of it for a new Edelbrock or carb of choice.. The Thermo quad is not for a newbie or tinkerer. The newer carbs are easier to manage and run better in my opinion.
