I have a 67 fury 3 with 383 4V 1406 carb with stock intake I have a growling noise coming from under the carb it doesnt seem to be the valve train because there isnt a lifter noise the noise is def on the top end I did notice that the factory valley pan insulation is missing could that be part of the problem? Any suggestions?

Has the car been in storage for a while? Could have a critter living in the valley pan :) I'm just kidding

I use a mechanics stethoscope, or a long screwdriver, to listen to engine noise to try to pinpoint the location of the sound. Maybe timing chain gear noise, or distributor drive gear noise. Noise can travel, that is why it is nice to have a stethoscope to try to isolate the point of the noise.

Is the noise something new?

Noise can travel
^This^

Sounds are often hard to figure out and pinpoint the exact cause. Sometimes it's really not where it seems like it's coming from.

My suggestion is to rule out external noise first. Remove the fan belts and start the car. You only want to run it for a minute or two, but that would rule out (or confirm) the noise is from a water pump, PS pump or alternator.

Growling sounds like a thirsty power steering pump
