you have to pry it off slowly using extreme care. the back of the emblem has tabs which push into inserts in the fender. it should come off without breaking the tabs off if you are careful. start from the center where there will be less stress. the tabs are located at the 4 corners of the emblem.

A new mechanical regulator can smoke on initial startup & use as the factory coating on the resistors buns off. Likely nothing wrong. A new ballast resistor will do similarly. Dan
