i dont know my aerodynamics well enough so i was trying to understand how/why one would design out horizontal stabilizers (no tail)? i get "how" they work ( how you do aerodynamic maneuvers without them but "why" eludes me.

Agree. Have had the same experience. Losksmith shops are more money, however when you factor in the time for recutting, travel, time, etc. The locksmith is worth the money.
