You may be able to pick up a mile/gallon or two with some advance curve and careful tuning but 18-20 is all you will get out of most 318 combinations. In my Swinger, I went from a 2.76 rear gear to a 3.23 and lost mileage but gained it back with some 15" 255-60 tires.

Try to punch them sideways without putting a hole in them, then pull them out.
