So you don't have $2,000 to get your steering wheel restored.......but, do you have $65 and reasonable expectations?

Thanks all - I'll need to post pictures of my ill-fated attempts at body work, just to balance the scales and keep ego in check ;-)

    So your NOS '60 - '62 column-mounted turn signal cancel switch doesn't work?....try removing 18lbs of grease!

So - One of the issues my 1961 Newport had was that the turn signal system wasn't working well - specifically that in the left turn mode, the lever would stay activated, but would not cancel after the turn, and for the right turn mode, the turn signal lever wouldn't stay activated at all. One of...

So you don't have $2,000 to get your steering wheel restored.......but, do you have $65 and reasonable expectations?

Well, I'd like to say I'm just that good at stitching, but the reality is I had a little help: I've done some leather work for other projects, and so I had a set of Pricking Irons - the black comb looking things - and you use those to punch your holes. You still need to measure your margins...

So you don't have $2,000 to get your steering wheel restored.......but, do you have $65 and reasonable expectations?

So, my recently acquired '61 Newport had a badly cracked steering wheel, and in fact the entire top rim of the wheel was missing the plastic (I believe this would have been a transparent gold-tone originally). I looked for a good used one.....LOLOLOL.....yes that was funny for me too. So then I...

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

Thank you! one of the things I like about it is that you don't see one every day - or even at every car show. I was thinking resin for the cracks myself - perhaps try color match.

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

The entire engine, from oil pan to intake, was painted the same red as the car. I have no idea why, and there is evidence it was once a light blue. I can only imagine that when the engine was replaced, they decided to paint the entire thing red - for reasons that escape me, but must have made...

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

Well, here is what I could find: My research suggests the block code (2205697) means its a 413 from 1959 - 1964. I am not sure what the "-2" means. The stamp pad numbers may be a date code, but not sure. S-41, again from research, suggests this means S = 1962 and 41= 413 engine and some...

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

The wheels - and I am not sure what brand or model - are 15". So no joy on that front. I wonder if everything came out of a New Yorker - grill, engine, transmission - it would make sense. Did the '62 have the long ram manifold as an option? Not that it matters I guess, the manifold could...

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

Thanks all - yes, there's lots of investigation to be done - The pulsation is in the way the car stops, not in the pedal - so I'd say its definitely a drum / Shoe thing. The only odd thing is that the car doesn't pull to one side or anything, so its as though the issue - whatever it is - is...

Introducing my new-to-me 1961 Newport.....and everything wrong with it.....erm...so far.

I've been asking a few questions here and there, some before I even bought the car, but now that she's here I thought I'd do the formal introduction....Meet "car" .....name TBD. "Car" is a 1961 Chrysler Newport, that has been sort of warmed-over as a 300 look-a-like, at least in part. She...

Is the 1961 Imperial power steering box the same as used in the 1961 Newport?

Thank you for that. It seems that there is a collar of sorts that is a few inches longer at the input shaft - I found a site that differentiates between the long and short collar, though it doesn't explain which one is for which model in 1961 - 1964. I may just reach out to Firm Feel - they are...

Is the 1961 Imperial power steering box the same as used in the 1961 Newport?

Hello folks - I'm building the list of things my '61 Newport will need, but first among them really is a new / rebuilt power steering box. There is 5+ inches of free play at the wheel and this is with no movement of the pitment arm - so the slop is in the box or in the way the shaft connects...

Can you help a Small block Chevy guy understand a 1962 Chrysler 413 with cross-ram manifold? - compression and pump gas?

Well - I've tied to steer clear of the "since I am here anyway" black hole of car projects in the last several years. I used to be a firm believer in the "might as well...." doctrine, but I now realize how much time, fun and frankly years that sort of thinking steals from you - your car ends up...

Asking for a little tech help understanding 1961 Chrysler power brakes.

Yeah - I suspect this is one of those situations where they have no idea what they are talking about. There are situations where you can use a disc master for drums, but its rarely the other way around, and these masters don't look like they have a fluid capacity - maybe. Beyond capacity though...

Can you help a Small block Chevy guy understand a 1962 Chrysler 413 with cross-ram manifold? - compression and pump gas?

Yea - thanks for that. I am learning steadily - this engine is a 413 (or at least reported as such) and I'm told comes from a similar era New Yorker. I've been speculating its a '62 base don a few small clues, but once the cat gets here I'll try find the various numbers and we'll find out for...

Asking for a little tech help understanding 1961 Chrysler power brakes.

OK, thanks. I actually found a few MOPAR-mount masters that look as though they might be shorter, and a few with the flat lid that secures with a nut. I've not looked at these in terms of bore or fluid volume, or in fact if they are the right mount for a '61 - I'm just eye-balling it and...

Hmm, I'll look at that too. I mean.... I don't even have the car here yet.....but....I like to think ahead ;-)

Asking for a little tech help understanding 1961 Chrysler power brakes.

That a very clean-looking set up for sure. I never thought about machining down the master - thats a good idea. Do you have any idea what over height you ended up with? Could help finding a flatter master cylinder.

Can you help a Small block Chevy guy understand a 1962 Chrysler 413 with cross-ram manifold? - compression and pump gas?

I think it has the '62 transmission. From what I can see of the transmission, it looks like an aluminum case, and I'm 96% sure the engine is 1962, so that would be the obvious solution. I thought perhaps I'd just buy a case of octane booster and run a bottle with every fill up. Supposed to...

Asking for a little tech help understanding 1961 Chrysler power brakes.

Well, I've since found this - though granted this is supposed to be mid-50's Dodge, seems to me the parts are in the same general places, so, I could imagine this is how it works on the '61 Chrysler. I'll also download the manuals.
