    Head gaskets

The Fel-Pro gaskets are always my first choice. Never had a problem with them.

    spark plug heat range

My 300J with the 390 hp 413 had J-9y's with a 9.7 comp ratio. When I rebuilt it, I dropped the ratio down to 9.0 and went with a J-8y as the 9's are no longer available. It runs fine at 32 degrees. It seems that every catalog shows pre-1970 Chryslers are supposed to use J-12Y's which were too...

What’s the best Hi-temp manifold paint?

This is what I used on the cast headers on my 300J six years and 16K ago. They still look as good now as the day I painted them.

    Oil Pump thoughts

I used a Melling standard pump in the 413 in my 300J. It maintains a steady 47lbs pressure at highway speeds, even in hundred degree weather. The high pressure and volume pumps create excessive heat and wear.

Harmonic balancer are all external balanced all the same?

The cast crank balancers were different for each engine. Some of the later ones for cast cranks actually had "use with 400 or 440 cast crank only" on the front. They were usually much thicker than the earlier ones and some had what looked like a crankshaft weight cast on them. Check out this...

    Cyl heads.

If you remove the valve cover, check that the rocker arms aren't worn out on the bottom of the shaft. Also check out the push rods on that cylinder, a sticking valve can bend or unseat one.

'69 440 first start : fuel supply problem

I would be looking at a new fuel pump. If this one has been dormant for all of those years the diaphragm is probably toast. It might work for a short time, but the newer fuels will ruin the diaphragm. Run a pressure test on the pump and see what it puts out. Also, I have found that a lot of...

    Cross Ram intake

The long ram intakes are the same between the low and high block engines. They are two separate manifolds. The difference was in the cast exhaust tubes that coupled the exhaust manifolds to the bottom of the intakes. The linkages were adjustable to compensate for the different width. The...

413 cross ram intake manifold value

One problem with the ram manifolds is that although they will fit both low and tall block engines, they won't fit in most cars as they are to wide and won't clear the fenderwells.

    4 speeds...

The only difference between the C & B body transmissions in '64-65 with the ball & trunnion is the rear mount pad on the tail housing. The B's have a 2-5/8" bolt center and the C's have a 4" bolt center. I put a '68 B body four speed in my '63 Chrysler and everything worked out very well.

    Rear end experts

I would stay away from the Detroit truetrac for on highway use. I had one in a 3/4 ton Dodge 4 wheel drive, it was wonderful off highway. You can feel the differential load and unload each wheel on uneven roads. Icy conditions could get very exciting.

    Camshaft question

This appears to be the replacement for the old TRW TM327 camshaft which was the stock replacement for big block Chrysler engines for years. It worked very well in all non-HP applications. They were an excellent low end torque engines in light duty trucks as well.

    440 engine question

Have a look at the valve cover gaskets also, they can leak at the back right onto the exhaust pipes.

It also looks like a truck flywheel.

    Carb Questions

The 9635s was an aftermarket replacement spec'ed out for a small block Chevy application. Your pictures show an earlier top cover with the small (4-1/8") air horn. The 9635s would have a 5" airhorn. I would suspect some fuel / air passage missalignment issues with this combination.

    413 Engine, Pro's & Con's

Looks like the early heads, I don't see bolts in the front of the valve covers. Seems unusual that the small valve heads would have been used with all of the other goodies. I'm always suspect when something is for sale immediately after a rebuild.

    Oil type

I have been running Pennzoil 30wt with a bottle of STP in my 300J and Desoto for several years now. The STP adds enough zinc to satisfy the needs of the camshaft and both are readily available nearly everywhere.

Crank needed for '65 automatic to '59 413 swap

The 62-65 413 cranks will be fine. The 440 counterweights are different and will require rebalanceing.
