Looking for any experience with what the torsion bars can handle, weight wise. Wanted to go with 5.9 Cummins but the extra 300-350lbs as opposed to the 4bt I am concerned with what is available even in the aftermarket. Have several different cars available to do this conversion so I have not nailed down the body I am choosing yet.

This should be interesting. There are aftermarket bars at PST i think and if that's the case they give members a 10% discount

I've got and old 300sd with a om617 that I've pondered powering my newport with some day. Haven't got past the pondering stage but nice to see somone might go the same direction.

Can't pick a torsion bar until you pick the specific car.
On 74-78 C-bodies specifically, I never found anything over 1.06" in diameter.
Welcome..

To an extent I agree. 74-78 New yorker, newport, gran fury, Monaco, and 74+ imperial all share the same sub frame so was curious if any were available for these formals

I might be a little concerned with where the torsion bar mounts rather than the bars themselves. I think I would also look into those weld on reinforcements for the lower control arms.

I've only seen the t-bars break on cars earlier than about 1964 and then only when the car is parked.

Talking Formals specifically, then the largest bar that I can recall finding was 1.06.
I have 1.00 or 1.04 in my 76 NYB (can't remember) which I believe was the std. bar on 440 Formals
Sorry, I can't remember if the 1.06 was aftermarket or Cop OEM.
The old brain, well... you know how it is.

Trust me, John. If you look at the mounts on a Formal, they are the last thing you need to worry about. lol

I know the 5.9 and the 4bt but what is the om617. I assume some small diesel. Turbo diesels are the rage lately.
