Chrysler was smaller than GM and couldn't afford to have completely separate mechanical stuff across divisions. Therefore, a lot of parts would interchange with more common models.

Thats not exactly true. Although it was a cost saver the reason Chry Corp. shared mechanical componants across their car lines was the superior engineering Chrysler enjoyed.

GM's corporate policys were completely different and their car lines rarely shared much. The engines GM used in their seperate car lines all suffered some sort of unique weakness and none of them matched the quality and reliability of Chrysler engines.
