The Moparts Best & Brightest say that the compressor couldn't handle the red line shifts expected on 440's.
So they say.
And it sounds very reasonable.
 
I'd say the 383 revved higher and quicker than the 440 .. I wonder if it was the torque of the 440 and they were afraid of thrown belts and damage to new cars
 
A 383/400 will wind up (rpm's) faster than a 440. I just don't see why a 440 can't handle A/C.
 
What was the story on this one?
Not real sure any more, think I read about it on the 62 to 65 Mopar board, opened communications with the guy that found it to see if I could lay my paws on it but he kinda disappeared quickly.
