We have a 1965 Sport Fury convertible. The trunk lid sits on an angle chipping the paint each time it's opened. Apparently our hinge is bent. We are wondering if we could replace our hinges with a 1965 Monaco hinge?

FIRST, try to loosen the attaching bolts just enough that you can shift the deck lid on them a bit. Fully loosen them and then re-snug them to hole things in place, but can be moved with a bit of effort. Frmo there, it is "cut and try" to get the best overall fit of the deck lid to the body.

IF the deck lid is moved, the deck lid latch striker on the body WILL need to be moved/re-adjusted, too.

The deck lid should fit squarely in "the hole", with equal panel gaps on each side and the front edge, too.

It WOULD BE best to determine WHY the caps are not the same! Body damage to one of the quarter panels or rear finish panel! That might be easier to fix rather than getting into the operation of trying to adjust the deck lid for clearance. IF the rest of the panel fits well, but is "close" at some location, determining WHY that is FIRST can determine what the best way to address the issue.

Where is the paint chipping issue located? IF the decklid otherwise fits well, it migiht be some re-shgaping the contact area is a better long term fix, with the deck lid STILL LOOKING like it fits well otherwise.

Things can be straightened - adjusted and tweaked without requiring hinge replacement.

Pictures would help.

According to the parts catalogue, Dodge and Chrysler share the same trunk hinge.

As said, it might be adjustable, but if it's bent... it's bent, and replacing is the better option.

Be careful of the torsion spring that holds the deck lid up while swapping hinges. It can hurt you if not careful.

In one respect, IF the car got whacked hard enough to bend the trunk hinges . . . find another car. LOTS of crumple room before the hinges would get bent. IF repaired, there should be ample evidence underneath, I would suspect. Look for areas of newer and possibly heavier undercoating material, for example.

Deck lid hinges don't get deformed with age, by observation. It takes FORCE.

Had the same problem on my 65 convertible! All hinges are not created equally. First and as Big John and others stated, try adjusting it. If not replace which I had to do and that was a major undertaking just to find one; even in 1965 different Fury's had different hinges. Luckily I found one on a 65 Fury convertible in a salvage yard and they knew that it was worth it's weight and I paid dearly but after months of searching, buying and trying different ones, I bit the bullet! Try and find one off of a 65 SF hardtop or convertible: 64 and 66 won't work. Good luck and hope it is just an adjustment!
