I bought a 66 satellite 383 4 speed when it was just 6 months old. It had an inland shifter. The only trouble I ever had with it was the reverse lockout cable broke once.

As far as shifting, no issues. It performed well under full power shifts through the gears, ( I would never do that now, but did on several occasions back then). Somehow they got a bad rap ........ Most likely someone who couldn't shift said ..... then someone else heard .... so on and so on.
If I had one now I wouldn't even consider changing it.

They're just kinda bulky and ugly. The only one I've ever used was worn out, but it didn't seem to be awful in terms of shifting. I just didn't like the look or the shape of the knob. I much prefer the '68 bench shifter/brown ball look, but to me, the plain white ball is iconic. As the flat bar hursts handles go, the 538-4077 full-sized Chrysler bench style is the absolute most attractive. The uppermost curl is way prettier than the similar B-body variant and its position over the seat in 4th just feels... right.

That said, the '65 console flat bar w/ white knob (like the one in John's 426 Monaco) is a very close second. I just have a thing for bench/4sp cars.

okay?
still doesnt answer why so many of these rot out there?
that was the real question.
I think he means that it's whole life may have not been in Texas and that the cancer may have started due to it's time spent in another climate.

That said, if you leave something under a tree or a tarp in Texas long enough, it'll rot out just the same.

And may we all learn from that guy's experience, don't work on a car until it's legally yours. Some of us would already know that, though.:stop:
Absolutely. As I said, Jerry and I did nothing to the Gremlin until we had the new Title in hand.

I don't know why they rot there for sure, but IIRC there is a piece of formed metal in there somewhere, with 2 large holes in it, that you have to go thru to access the speednuts that hold that trimpiece on at the base of the C-pillar. MAybe it collects crud, but I can't explain where that crud would come from. Maybe mousenest and acidity in mouse pee?

My 300L was a CA car, spent a year or so in MI before I got it. It has no rust and all orig body panels, except for 1 small rusthole above 1 fenderskirt (not unusual location) and a very tiny one at the C-pillar base - but on opposite sides of the car.
