1967 VIP brake sizes and possible conversion

I have a 1967 VIP Fury. The front brakes are 11 x 2-1/2” and I can’t seem to find shoes and mostly drums in that size. New drums I can only find from Bendix and Napa are for 2-3/4 or 3” size for a very expensive price. Question, Will the 3” shoes and drums fit, if I just replace those parts? Assuming I can’t find the 2-1/2” size.

The rear is my big problem. Someone replaced everything including the backing plates to 11 x 2” size. But they don’t fit, the drum doesn’t go all the way to the backing plate so the shoes ride about 1/2” outside the drum. I figure 11 x 2-1/2” shoes and drums should fix the problem. But I’m not sure. Any help is appreciated.

PS Canadian car with the 318 poly if that makes a difference.

Your front drums and shoes should be 11 x 2 3/4". Check you measurements again. It is possible that someone put the wrong size shoes on your car. The 3" drums will not fit unless you replace the backing plates with 3" backing plates.

11 x 2" is the correct size for the rear brakes. If your car had the heavy duty brake option then it would have 11 x 3" front & 11 x 2 1/2" rear drums. You can use finned rear drums from an early 1970's C Body.

Are your rear drums fitting flush on the axles?

Hi, and Greetings.

I wouldn't have thought that retail brake shoe availability would be a problem in Ontario. I assume you've tried all the usual places (Canada tire, Car Quest, Napa, Parts Source, etc?).

I tend to buy from Rockauto.com because the price (including shipping) can usually be equal to if not less than what I see at retail. I'm looking now at what rock is selling for Fury and VIP (I'm assuming it's going to be the same brake shoe as what I have in my '67 Monaco).

I see 10" and 11" drums (did Fury's have 10" front drums?) and I see 2", 2.5", 2.75" and 3" widths. I see applications showing the possibility of front and rear 11" x 3" size. Prices range from $20 to $66 for a set of 2 pair.

Drum availability is much lower, I do see front 11" x 2.75" and 3", $85 each. They don't list any for the rear, so that could be a problem.

I put a set of "DYNAMIC FRICTION 1901033600 True-Arc" in the shopping cart ($60) and the shipping (to London Ontario) is $27, the total is $99 (CAD).

Having a closer look at what they're offering, it could be that they are not listing a front 11 x 2.5". Most of the front listings they're not showing the width.

Growing up a '67 Fury is what "started" me on C-body cars from that year............. feel free to post a photo sometime.....

FURYGT. The fronts I measured the material width. Now that you mention it, that might be smaller than the shoe itself. I’ll recheck and proably there 2-3/4” because they ride perfectly in the middle of the drum.

The rear drum fits perfectly on the axle. It’s just offset so the drum doesn’t come close to the backing plate. So the shoe sticks out 1/2” and obviously the shoes don’t ride in the Center of the drum machined face.

Does 2-3/4” front and 2-1/2” rear sound right for this car? It’s pretty much an unmolested car from what I can see.

More than likely your VIP would have came with 11x2-3/4" up front. 11x2" on the rear. Get in touch with Craig @mobileparts. He is a member here who sells the older, high quality parts our cars need. I’m beginning to suspect the backing plate is for a 2-1/2”. Does anyone know how to tell which backing plate I have and if the 2” backing plate is available.

Talk to Craig (@mobileparts ) - he will see this tag and chime in if he's able. If he doesn't respond, message me and I'll hook you up with his phone number. He'll have the right parts NOS or correct NOS aftermarket for your car.

The other option you have is to have your original shoes relined with new friction material - then you know they fit and work with your existing setup. I suggest you talk to North American Rebuilders in Oakville, or John Stuart Power Brake in Stoney Creek.

When it comes to MOPARS, never say never. It is possible that your car was built with 2 1/2" rear drums or someone may have done a swap.

Sadly, Craig is in out of commission due to multiple injuries. I have 11 x 2 3/4" front drums and old stock brake shoes (the new ones suck) and I may have some 2 1/2' rear shoes and maybe even drums that new replacement old stock items, meaning not made in China, however shipping likely would increase the cost to much.

Thanks all. You got me pointed in the right direction. Nationalmoparts is close to me and has used backing plates. So I’m just going to replace everything back to original 2” set up.
Great group here and really helped me out.
