Hey Guys, Great forum here!!!

I purchased a 68 new yorker 4dr i am putting back together gold with black interior... motor and trans were harvested by previous owner for another project.. But body is too clean and only 50k miles to scrap or demo.. plus I have title for it. I purchased a 68 440 non hp motor that I am going thru and will put in it with a rebuilt trans. I have a few questions.. since I was mostly a chevy guy until about 2 years ago.

First, What color motors are 68 HP and 68 non HP?

Second, this motor does not have a vin on the bottom of the block oil pan rail. Is this something that was added after 68?... Motor is cast in 67.

Thanks for the help in advance. Robin.

I had heard that Mopar did not start stamping VIN numbers on engines/trans until 1069 or 1970 (not certain of the year). So if you have a Mopar earlier than that, there isn't a 'numbers matching' thing to be concerned about.

Thanks Badvert... So that would explain why there is no vin code on motor. Learning as I go here. Thanks again.

Starting in January of '68 they began putting the vin on the top of the block near the mailing surface of the trans by the oil pressure sending unit. This means that before mid year for the '68 model run there are no vin #s on the blocks, the second half of the run the vin will be where I mentioned. In '69 they began putting it by the pan rail on the passenger side.

Thanks Matt.

So.. no VINS before January 68 period on the motors. That explains why I do not see any VIN info on this motor. So, basically... people have no way of confirming numbers matching prior to that time.

I would be interested the 68 a/c stuff you have.. but have no plans to head to detroit anytime soon..

Where do you live? Shipping it might not be too bad, I'd give you a heck of a deal!

Just emptied it!

In the numbers matching world date codes are looked at, so they would want to at least see the correct date coded block.

If there is no vin on block by the trans mating surface and the block is cast in 2nd half of 67 I would say you should be good as far as date code, pad by dist will tell you when the engine was built into a actual engine or at least the model year.

.... Yep... D 440

Yes.. the motor is D 440. NO HP. What really is the difference.. besides 2 strikes with the die? Nickel content?

So... what you are saying.. is.. there is no difference in the block.. composition wise from hp and non hp. So everyone clamoring over HP blocks are wasting money and time..

I'm so tired of having to explain that I just don't bother anymore. In 2063 somebody's going to ask that...
