That's what a 290hp 383 C-body that needs a little of everything is worth to me. Is it lower than he's asking? Sure. Is it unfair? I don't think so. I like the car, but I've watched driver '68-'70 two door b-bodies go for what he's asking. I think his asking price is absurd. He may catch a sucker who thinks he'll get $25K after a trip to the vinyl wrap shop, but It isn't going to be me. I passed on a nice '68 Dodge 9 passenger out west recently for $2500. I'm really looking for a '68 Plymouth or Chrysler and I'll get one eventually, but I'm not paying 2006 "it's worth $XXXXX finished" money for it. Those days are gone.

I disagree, the scarcity of nice wagons drive the price up. The interest in wagons has also gone up. I don't know where this one is valued but 5 k for a nice rust free pre 74 wagon would be considered " a steal"

The car may or may not have a Fair Market Value of $5,000.00 but the FMV is not the issue here. When I want $12,500.00 in my brilliant or delusional mind for a car, if someone told me the car was worth $5k, I'd rip him a new butthole. Whether I was right or wrong.

Certainly if someone just offered an unsolicited "I think your car is worth $X" that would be totally useless and intrusive. That isn't what I did, though. He's selling something and I said, "I'm a buyer at $5000." He can do with that what he chooses. I followed it up by saying, "I'm not trying to be insulting and you're welcome to hold onto my number and compare it to other offers, but that's where I am." He can decide that it's worth more in utility than that and I'm totally fine with that. He could have simply said, "no, thanks" and I also would have been completely cool. I don't need the car (my neighbors are thankful for this guy's inflated pricing) and I'm not losing sleep over the number of months I'm going to see that ad mixed in with my near-daily 1968 Fury search results. I pass by 100 ads all over the country where I think, "I'd never pay that." I'm simply passing a car along that I think is particularly cool (not $12.5K cool, but definitely cool). I'm also cautioning to potentially interested parties that the guy is easily agitated.
We can post as many free online price guides that say the car is worth $20K as we want, but it just isn't. In a world where this car <1968 Plymouth Fury III> can't move at successively lower prices from $7500 to $3900 over a span of months, that wagon isn't a $12.5K car. Not to sensible, knowledgable people anyway. I don't care how long the roof is or physically present the (probably locked up) RV2 compressor is. 290bhp/390lbft and 230bhp/340lbft through an 1800 stall converter and a highway gear isn't all that different to my butt dyno--especially if we're going to assume that A/C will someday be functional (at its job of leeching power).
I mean, just a dozen ads down from this one is a GORGEOUS '70 Suburban that people were picking apart for the velour at a very reasonable $5000 and the deal STILL went across the pond.

The gorgeous 70 with the velour interior ? It had a velour interior, it was far from gorgeous. That was a car I'd have to severely haggle over . The more modified the car is the more I lose interest in owning it..

For 5 grand on an otherwise pretty car, I'm happy to invest in some hog ring pliers and a call to Dante's to fix the one part I couldn't live with.
Look, we're splitting hairs here and each of us is inclined to pay more/less for some stuff than others. An E-body snob might not even part with the $5K I offered. And you're right; there's a remote chance that somebody needs a '68 Plymouth wagon for any price. I paid $5K (his asking price) for my 4 speed car and it was really too much for the shape that it's in... but I needed it and I can drive it right now. The point is that I made an offer. And if my experience of late in this geographic area/market segment is any indication of the general old car climate, it may well be the only offer he's received. That isn't to say he should accept it... but maybe don't be so sour about it.
At the end of the day, I'm just happy that these cars exist. If someone thinking that these old hulks are a 401K keeps them out of the derby/junkyard, I'm all about it. Maybe I'll pick it up at for a song one day when the executors of the estate don't have any idea what it is.

I agree with most of that... I simply wanted to point out that there are those that think it's got a higher value.

I don't know what this Sport Sub is worth, but I'm pretty sure not $12.5k. Not with torn seats, frayed windlacing, piece of trim at the rear taped on, missing the hood letters, armrests cracked, and the grimiest fenderwells and valve covers I've seen in a long time. And the woodgrain needs help - patina on paint is a selling feature, but not on woodgrain IMO.
This is a car that yes, wows them at the Piston Show, but look at it for more than 3 min with buyer's eyes and I bet there are flaws everywhere that those pictures don't show.
Yes, all those things are fixable at not too much money. But you fix those things first, *then* you ask your 12.5. Don't leave me to fix those things, and charge me for it too.

I spent 6mos looking for a big wagon at the time I was not set on a particular brand but wanted to find one without rust. This seemed to be almost impossible as almost everyone I looked at under 9k had rust or was a complete mess on the interior. I decided on a Chrysler because I found one with A/C, no rust and average interior. I have still spent a lot of money finding special parts that are unique to wagons. I can tell you my budget was blown away and I have gotten more than a few ticked off looks from my wife. I would also say that had I purchased a GM or Ford it would have been much cheaper. Having said all of this I am still happy with my choice. After looking at the pictures of the Plymouth for $12,500.00 it may not be a bad deal if everything works. however based on the interior and woodgrain I think you would still be looking at another $6-8000.00. This is just my opinion. Good luck with your search.
