I wish I'd checked this when buying the car last week - in park or neutral the reversing lights are off as expected, but in reverse and drive they come on. Is a faulty neutral safety switch able to cause that or a column shifter issue?

If that's true I've got a big problem with maybe a wrong transmission, the old switch doesn't have reverse circuit pins. I'm going to have to pull the bulbs as a short term fix because while it's illegal to have nonfunctional reversing lamps, it's even more illegal to have white lights on the back of a car - instant pull over by police.

Wow that is different from ‘68. The only switch on the transmission is the neutral start switch. Did that change in ‘69? I would check your service manual in both the transmission section and the steering column section. In the ‘ 68 with column shift the reverse light switch is in the column.
Does the light come on In 2 or 1?

‘68 FSM and a picture of the column mounted switch.

Yeah I checked the manual - it's saying 3 pin on transmission and nothing in the steering colums section. I didn't check 2 & 1, should have thought to try that.

Ok, sorry for the distraction. I will watch and learn.

If you had a single pole NSS and it was correct for the trans, switching to a three pole NSS won't help. The rooster comb on the valve body is different between those two transmissions. Pic from the intrawebs. The one on the left is for a "push button" type trans, middle is for a '65 -68 and the right is a '69 up.

I think the rooster comb can be switched... but don't bet the farm on that. They sell them on eBay.

Since the car has a "rebuilt transmission" I'm honestly expecting to find it's an older trans rebuilt as an exchange unit... I've definitely got the 3 pin NSS or the reverse lights wouldn't work at all.

Well neither part looks exactly like the manual, but the one on the left above looks more like it. I'll need to find out what's in the car by pulling the NSS after doing a meter test across the pins in R/D- I've no access to a ramp so it's probably best to locate a parts source and try to find a Torqueflite specialist in the UK. If it's the wrong rooster comb then the valve body has to come off. Sigh.

It's not something I can do myself unfortunately. I'd be happy to try to learn but the car lives half an hour away at a place with no garage facilities, and I don't have enough space at home or a covered working area. All I can do myself are jobs I can guarantee won't result in a non moveable car before the sunlight fades / rain starts.

Since the fluid is low I'll try to find the transmission part/date stamps when I top it up in a week, I'll also test continuity in all selector positions across the NSS pins to see if that's where the problem starts (seems very, very likely). I'll have to order a new NSS and based on the transmission code probably order the type of rooster comb needed, then find somewhere that's worked on 727s before. I guess a new gasket for the transmission cover too - anything else?

Looks like the radio/reverse lamps are on a single fuse if the manual is correct - since the aftermarket cd player is dead (got a NOS tested radio to go back in) and all the speaker wires seem to be cut anyway, that can be my temporary disable of reverse lamps.

If the trans pan is coming down get a filter kit, it will have the filter and gasket. When you find someone to do the work, you should have the bands adjusted while the pan is off.
