1969 Imperial progress thread

I love your rationale! "500 euros for the cutting, after I've done the hard work? No way! I'll just buy a machine for 600 euros. Priceless. With some cottage industry sales, it will eventually pay for itself. The gaskets look great!!!
That was the plan. I hope it works out ;)
But even if not, I already made so much stuff for myself that buying the mashine alraedy worked out for me! :)

It took 10 month and almost $2000 to get the new passenger door is in its place, aligned properly and all the panel gaps as perfect as they're gonna get.
After I got the door back from e-coating, I tried to align all the doors and fenders proberly, but the gaps were all over the place. So I called my bodyman, and this saturday, he came all the way from Stuttgart (which was a 320 miles round trip for him) to work on the doors and fenders to get all the panel gaps right.
Since the new door was 3mm longer then my original door, nothing was fitting right. So he cut away metal from the front and back edges of the doors and fenders, welded the edges back up, added a bunch of material in some placed, before grinding down the edges until all the gaps were as perfect as possible.

So FINALLY the car is ready for paint...! What an odyssey...
This debacle really tested my patience to keep going!

Does anyone has experience with D&D Automobilia?
My steering wheel is there for over 2 years now and I'm not able to get in touch with him to get an answer when I can expect it to be done.
He has my Steering Wheel and $500`...

@bluefury361
Will, if I remember correctly, you have a recast steering wheel from D&D, right?
How long did it take until you got your steering wheel back?

I spoke with him about a month ago and he said mine would probably be done this fall, we'll see. I mentioned yours and he said it was in the works. Like many places here employment issues, sounds like his main mold man retired but came back to help out.

I called about 1:00pm his time.

Thanks for the update, Alan! It's not that I'm particularly in a hurry, but some feedback here and there would be nice, especially in such a long time span. That applies for a lot of craftsmen in the business!

Two years?, SMS is another business which keeps customers waiting, and waiting...

Just waiting for the material ??? What did you order if i can ask....
Not me, another Imperial owner who is a local, waited months and months for material to re-trim the seats in his Imperial, he ended up going there in person, funny enough, he got it not long after (his missus and a woman at SMS are both Asian and got talking...).

Any business that keeps customers waiting for months/years is taking the mickey, why take on more work if they can't deliver?
Ask every contractor ever. I'm sure pertains to the idea of capturing a customer, but it's a terrible business practice.

I'm guessing the $500 was a down payment or deposit. No?
If that was the price 2 years ago, it's over $2K from D&D now.
