Every Newport I owned never let me down except for my first one. I beat the car into the ground it took a lot of punishment. My old man bought it new and gave it to me on my 17th birthday. The car had 140,000 mi on it I put through 25,000 miles of constant speed. I had the speedometer pinned on a great open highway several times. Back in the early 70's this highway was used for organized races. The highway had barely any cars on it and the police could not hide on this road. It is Highway 21 in north Jersey it takes you from Passaic to Newark. It was called the highway to hell because Newark and Passiac are both bad areas. The 72 I owned I bought it it had 60,000 Mi sold it at 105,000 for what I originally paid for it. It was a nice coupe it was gold w gold interior. To make a long story short when I finally killed the first Newport my dad was pissed. I remember him standing there with the hood open and smoke poring out fluids poring out saying I put 140,000 miles on it give it to you and look at it. A few weeks later he bought me 1980 Toyota 2WD pick up 4 speed on the floor. I'am not joking the top speed was 55 MPH on a steep hill I might hit 60. It had no A/C manual everything not even a sliding rear window it was a toaster. I saved money gave it back to him and went out and bought the 72 Newport it was garage kept in really nice shape. I told him the day I bought it and told him nothing about what I bought. I can see the steam poring out his ears when I was on the phone. With him you had to get the car checked out no if ands or buts. I knew it was well taken care of car. When he got home he actually walked around the car jumped inside walked in the house and was impressed by it. He took it for a ride and loved the car. He just said don't run this one into the ground like you did the other. I wish I had pictures back then I paid 700 bucks for a nice cream puff. Then I had someone begging me to buy it a couple years and over 25,000 miles later offer me 700 bucks. Then I found a really nice triple black 69 Caddy Coupe De Ville it had very little surface rust but the interior was perfect nice black leather seats fully loaded P/W P/L cruise and climate control P/S P/mirrors it got 8 miles to the gallon with 472 motor it was a nice riding car. But nothing beats the Imperial ride. The Imperial was a special car it was more comfortable then the Cadillac and the 71 Lincoln MarkIV and the Imperial shifted so smooth. Suspension was better and the 73 was a faster car the either Caddy or Lincoln was a dog with 460. I kept it for a few months and sold it. i did not like it
