Yeah if you can find those H wheels with april to june 69 dates and complete sets dated coded they will go for a grand a wheel~

think of how many C body wagons or cop cars got crushed with there sets still on them!!

I think it is just stupid that there are rims out there that are "worth" as much per rim as some cars!!

Does anyone know if any C bodies actually came with H code wheels in 69? I know they all get moved around on cars anyway when tires where changed but I have always been on the lookout for some of them on a C body.
Yup, my car has them.

I thought that it was more than a letter. It was the code that is stamped on the bead area, maybe JJ or something like that.

With all do respect to those that re do these old cop cars, what makes them so special? I see this talked about often. Will people 35 years from now be restoring crown vics? Special motors? Special suspensions? What am I missing about these cars? Alot more of these were made then my 300 convertable but yet perceived to be worth so much more. I mean special paint was just black and white right? There is a local guy that drives around a 70s coronet cop car.

Think of it as a four door Road Runner is how it was described once. Beefier suspension, brakes, motors and interiors. For decades the top Police cars were one of the top five or ten fastest cars every year. You could not buy one new unless you were in that selective law enforcement service. Heck they even had special names like "Pursuit" and special ordering codes like 9C1. Now if you could find a used one they were typically cheapier than non Police cars but treated roughly and appreciated by few. Yes, the cars are not for everyone but for those of us when we see a restored one our heart starts fluttering. The prices have climbed for many squads because its simply a matter of supply and demand. How many of these cars were scraped vs saved and restored. They also are not what I call "cookie cutter cars" where you can go and find multiple vendors selling the same parts. How many Challergers or Mustangs are at the car shows. If you really want to stand out then join the club (Police cars) but when you find one you will be estatic.

Why would you think any less, not many made, even less left

I have one and I paid less. Mine has CHP history, this would still be a clone (CHP) I still say it is a $2500 car, maybe up to $4000 but $8000?

What I am seeing Alan is that these cars are really starting to climb, and I was the one that didnt think they would. How many 69 Polara police cars are left unfinished? This one has the CHP stuff, thats all they need, isnt it?

You have had yours for how long now? Was it in worse shape?

I think this might show that the market is waking up to the big C body 440 cars. As Dave knows I am kind of a 440 guy and I think the polaras with 440's in them are very cool and I think the market will wake up to this fact some time too. WAY TOO MANY Cudas, RR's and Chargers at shows now days. Be different have a C body with a factory 440!!

Obviously the 440 cars will command a premium but it seems they are all coming up. Fortunately I have bought some stuff over the years otherwise I couldnt afford it now. Have a look at some of that NOS stuff.........outrageous

$8k this quick with that few bidders and that much time left.........I wonder if the bids are legitimate.

The question here is what are you buying? a 440 parts car or a fully equipped restored CHP car or something in the middle. Obviously it isn't a restored car but what is it? If someone was to say a particular car was in Jay Leno's garage would not say he owned it or ever drove it, the car just made an appearance at his facility.

This car is no different, it was NEVER used by the CHP and is only one of their custom package cars. There were about 1500 CHP package cars in 69. Could this car be restored and represent the CHP, yes? But the question comes up all the time, is this a genuine CHP car? to me the answer would be no. Almost as often the next question is what office/area and sometime was it even used by them.

As for my car, it needed some more body work (that is to be seen on this one), it didn't run (doesn't matter you are still rebuilding the engine on this one), the market hasn't changed that much in the 4 years I have had my car. In short I do not see anything on this one that would save me the difference and at the end of the day there is no prominence/pedigree. Bottom line I don't think this car is worth that much, I have been looking for about five years and have seen several others needing the same full restoration that could have been purchased for less. I know somebody who has 2 that he purchased in the last couple years for less than that.

In all I know of about 14 of them (1969's)

This.
Look at the bid history, something seems amiss.

Alan

I paid more for mine, but it was in much better shape, has true CHP pedigree, and came with all the correct accessories etc.

Alan, I'm glad that you have your car and are restoring it to the finest detail that you can, and your are truly to be commended for your efforts and hard work. I know what it takes to do the work you are doing.

In regards to the price, it's simply a matter of limited supply and demand. The demand its limited but strong. Like wise in the vintage Ferrari market, or Hemi convertible market.

The CHP Polara is perhaps the most well known MoPar police package, it isn't the rarest, but it may be the most well known, often quoted top speed reports at the Proving Grounds of 148.80 etc., and with the provenance of California Highway Patrol, it is internationally a very good car to have in ones collection.

The fact that you bought yours "cheap", doesn't the market make, and good on you! I know of others that have sold for much more and in worse condition that the car on offer.

Having said that, I totally agree with you in that, I would restore it as an "as delivered CHP package car" and not an "in service CHP" vehicle.

The facts are that there are few cars to be had, and there is a desire to have a unique car e.g. CHP Polara next to your Hemi 'Cuda or Shelby 350 or Ferrrari 330 etc.

Let us be glad that "the market" has value for these rare police vehicles, it floats all boats. And let us not complain about the entry price when the rarity and value is apparent.

Best,

FP
