1970 300 convertible trunk questions

Of course we are talking 1969 and 1970. It might be a model year change too.

Possibly a change to conserve spatter paint.

I have another question, if I wish to repaint the tail light bezel on the bottom section is the Argent silver a match? Looks like it would be. Mine is worn through in a few spots from people wiping it.

Yes, argent silver.

I gotta do mine one of these days...

Just doing this and finishing up my trunk area on the '70 vert, spare on the right side, trunk is body color. The '70 coupe however is spatter paint, body color on the edge with the trunk lock. I know what you mean about the paint being poured in and just sloshed around, that's what the '73 NYr trunk pan looked like.

I cede that a fixture might have existed, but my guess is that it was rarely used and that's why the majority of cars I've seen personally and those posted here are body color at the latch area. I'd also keep in mind that trunk spatter paint has been sold in the touch-up aisle since these cars were new. I'd imagine it was popular with car dealer/detailers back in the day.

The spatter paint called out in the FSM for the "luggage compartment" is a three color. I think black gray tan but I will have to confirm this. I do know there is a three color available from plastikote in black gray white.

My 69 Polara was fully spatter Gray/White/Aqua, this also shows the factory "convertible" spare mounting.

The Other 69 Polara I had was only spattered on the wheel wells and inside the quarters (anything else is overspray)

On both the the full inside of the taillight panel was body color along with the trunk striker.

So far my 69 300 is the only one with spatter paint on the latch panel...... A true 1 of 1. Call Galen.
The lack of a blacked out core support just ads to the mystique.

and the plastic air dam in front of the radiator looks to have red paint on it, accident repair?

Will can confirm, but I seem to remember that his car had one re-spray before his restoration? That would explain the over-spray on the cooler core. I have seen other supports without the black out. His might have been a Monday morning or Friday afternoon build. Clearly there are inspection marks on the core.

I think it's like everything else that happens on the assembly line. They were spitting out cars and however they were at the end of the line is how they were. I think they depended on the dealers to correct some of the mistakes.

Quality was in the toilet back then compared to now. That wouldn't fly now... The guy putting the radiator or condenser in would hit the button and stop the line. At minimum, the car would get tagged for repair at the end of the line.

I stopped overthinking this stuff a while ago and bought a C-body.

The bumper bracket has a pretty healthy amount of paint as well. Not doubting the rad yoke wasn't blacked out, but the overspray has to be from a re-spray. This is exactly were you'd get O/S when painting the front valance.
