I restored the instrument cluster on my 300 a couple of years ago & have driven it very little since. Recently I've been driving it trying to figure out some problems and I noticed the speedometer isn't*working. The cable/housing/clip are securely attached to the speedo. Can I remove the transmission end and spin it with a drill? If so which way?
Thanks

From memory, the speedo operates by anti-clockwise rotation of connection at back of speedo. So it will be also anticlockwise at the transmission end of the cable. Are you sure the cable point was inserted properly and connection tightened up enough at the speedo? It only takes a slight disengagement for the speedo to either jump or not work at all.

All I can say is I took it off of the rear of the speedometer to check out that end. It isn't very easy to get to. I put it back and it seemed to slide on just fine and I could see the housing at the end of the cable seemed to be well seated on the back of the speedometer.
Don't know what else to look at. I thought it would take a little fiddling around to get the square hole lined up with the cable end but it slid right in??
Thanks

My opinion is this: jack up the car and place rear end of car on jack stands, disconnect the easiest end of the cable (transmission), get someone to look into the car and watch if the speedo moves at all while you spin it by hand. If I remember correctly you can push the cable in slightly if it is not connecting. Then try spinning it agian and person watching to see if it moves. The alternative is to get your hand behind the speedo and feel is it is turning without binding and see if that makes the speedo move. Good Luck.
