Let me ask...we asked what my car is worth as is....what does FCBO think its worth restored?!? Not a trailer queen resto, but a correct restoration that one could drive and enjoy?
If your doing it yourself and your labor has no value... I agree with 1/3 to 1/2 as a high mark. If you ever try to sell before its running and looking good, pennies on the dollar... maybe even less than scrap value when scrap is high. I agree with most of what is said... with one exception. Those of us who have room for only 1 or 2 cars and have the intention of "keeping them forever"... It is a hobby or obsession that you will have to measure value in the enjoyment you get working on it and occasionally using it and maybe just having it.

If the finished product is all you really want... find a better car.

If you make it a DD you will run it down over time, worse and faster if you drive it in weather. I justify the value of my driver cars by my investment vs what payments would be over time. Dropping $2-3k at once and then nothing for months to follow still works out cheaper than the cheapest payment, but wont work with a too old car in most circumstances.

commando1 your house should eventually be able to recoup. Nobody really has a clue how the market for their old car will turn...1 good movie featuring a NYB could make it all change. Some cars are just too sexy (second gen Chargers) not to have some value in the future, but you still never know how the market will turn (early/mid 60s Rivieras).

My point was, I built the house I never want to move away from (willingly).
Whether it goes to a Million or to zero is totally meaningless to me, personally. I don't care.
