If I remember correctly the engine size is cast into the block, look on the sides of the engine and bottom of the cylinders

Yes, the size of the engine is listed on the block, just below the heads. It's in large numbers, but you can only see it from below the car.

In the below picture of the 401 we built and put in my Son's '73 Gremlin, the number is right below the header. If I were at home I could post a picture.
