Whoever removed the sunroof and filled the trim holes did a decent job of doing so.
Our own Mr. C has said that trying to do so was a fool's errand. The plug is plastic and the stress and temperature contractions make it guaranteed to crack where filled.

found this last month, amazing to see this car in this condition:

In either late 2002 or early 2003, I "discovered" an ad for this car on the old stationwagon.com for sale. I told a friend about it, and by that time I think it was on ebay or some other websites as well. He flew up and drove it home. At that time he had 5 or 6 other sunroof mopars, so it fit well in the collection. He did some restoration work to the car, and sold it. I think a couple other people owned and added some restoration touches to it as well. This car came with GY8 gold steelies and poverty caps, not rallyes like some of the ads online claimed when it was for sale. 3 fender tag car. thats me in ( and out ) of the car ranchero&wagon.jpg

GREAT PIC!!!!!! And correct me if I am wrong, but this is Tim, right? I haven't seen your friend's collection but "5 or 6 sunroof MOPARS" obviously makes me very jealous.

yeah Mark, its Tim. The cars got sold off a few years ago.

Hi Tim,

why are you in the picture waving your arm out of the wagon?
It doesn't help anymore, we have seen the Ford in the pic already :)))

Greetz Carsten,

And this is coming from the mopar collector with a Mercury Cyclone in his collection? :) You know I have a soft spot (in my head) for Fords. That wasn't just any ford, but a 1 of 5 Ranchero Squire with a 429CJ 4spd shaker hood car with a/c. It also has wood grain, and you know how I like that too!

I always liked the Fords especially the late 60's and early 70's mid sized versions to include Rancheros .. and the names of their engine and rear end packages

Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet, Boss 429, Boss 302, Detroit Locker, Police Interceptor, Top Loader, the SOHC cammers, etc. Kid stuff but still evokes a nostalgia for me

My Dad had a Star Liner too with a 312 Thunderbird engine in his yout also and seemed to be a Ford guy until he turned Mopar with his first which was a 65 Sport Fury 383 4 speed convert, then 68 RR .. he still liked Ford thought and a had a couple of those afterward. 73 Gran Torino Sport and a 70 Mercury Marauder

Sounds like a very cool Ranchero. For me it could be grabber blue though. But the colour wouldn't match the woodgrain.

It is now over a year that I did not break down with the Mercury anymore.
But I will have to drive it again at one point I am scared.

Fantastic looking car and I have no problem at all with everything the narrator mentioned about the car in the video except the sunroof. I'd need to see the broadcast sheet to sign up to the notion the roof is a factory installation. "Maybe" a wagon roof panel could be coaxed into the press that formed the sunroof opening "if" the wagon roof outer contours matched those of a 4dr. I have no doubt that all of the inner structure could mount in without an issue, but by 1972 Chrysler's days of doing `one-of' stuff like this were pretty much over. I'm also curious how the dome lamp problem was resolved.

Doubtful that car really came from the factory that way. For one thing, rallye wheels certainly were not available on any C Body wagons "from the factory" nor were road wheels, much less on a pursuit package vehicle, and the sunroof is doubtful as well. I would like to see the body code plate. A lot of hype IMO.

I don't know...I'd say this car is very much possible, in terms of an as-ordered vehicle. With the right salesman/manager, plus connection to the factory, you really could get a custom vehicle up through the late '70s.

As an example, I worked at a Buick store in the late '70s. A lady came in one day and wanted a brand new Riviera in a specific color combination - red exterior with green leather, or the converse. Nothing else would work. She had a Christmas store, and wanted to have the same colors in her daily car. The owner of the dealership was involved, and agreed to call the factory to see if they'd build that color combo. Sure enough, the plant manager agreed, but suggested that the buyer pay 100% upfront for the car. By the end of the day, the car was spec'd out, and the woman wrote a check for the full amount. The dealer called the bank to confirm the check was good, and the car was ordered. Just seven weeks later, a brand new 1978 Buick Riviera rolled off the transport, much to the buyer's delight and our surprise. The green Riv with the red leather interior was really quite stunning! It was ordered with a power sunroof and AM/FM/CB radio, wire wheels, and pretty much everything you could get in a Riv!

So, yes, you could order what you wanted in the '70s, with the right combination of a willing dealer, the factory's OK, and cash.

According to the dealership data books back in 1972 - you could get a sunroof on a 2-door or 4-door hardtop - but the sunroof was not supposed to be available on the wagons. That said, this wagon is supposed to have both a fender tag and a broadcast sheet that back up the options, and has a good back story to go with it. A fire dept chief ordered this one up special with most of the boxes checked, except power windows. Being a chief - he probably had the money to plunk down on this car - just like patrick66's story about the Christmas Lady. I have yet to see pictures of the tag or broadcast sheet though............
