The rust is most likely from road salt that scratched the sides and was never washed off the car when it was put away in a damp location, for years I'd imagine the undercarriage is worse. I live about 40 miles away, so I'm kind of familiar with it.

Nice to see- the body looks very solid after all.. A good candidate for a repaint in that factory color.. I like it.

Just wanted to post an update here and let you guys know that I bought the car.

Drove up to New York two weeks ago with my father and 11 year old son and we stood in the rain and checked out the vehicle. For an upstate New York car it seemed to be in remarkable condition. There was of course the rust on the lower sides but there were no holes. I couldn't get totally underneath it in the wet tall grass but what I saw seemed to be manageable. The leaf springs and parts of the frame were spotty but the floor boards were solid and there were no holes.

It wouldn't start at first for me but I think I was too heavy on the pedal and flooded it. Finally got it started and drove it around the field. The interior was pretty much perfect with the exception of a small hole in the seat from the original owner's pipe tobacco. The vinyl top was beautiful - I couldn't feel any bubbling or soft spots.

The original owner died about 10 years ago and it was being sold by his son. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for - an unmolested car that needs a bit of work. Work however, that I feel I can manage.

Getting it back to Virginia was a bit of debacle but it is here now in my garage and I have started the process of getting it road worthy. Braved a 2.5 hour punishment of DMV on a Saturday and got it registered. I haven't worked on cars since I was in high school but I am looking forward to getting back into it. There are a ton more resources available these days (including this site) and I am a lot more patient.

Thanks for the responses.

Dave

It would be great to document the little things you need to do (in a diary or put your receipts in a file).
Take your time, and have fun. Send us some additional photos.
