1973 Dodge Fan Clutch

Hayden 2747 HD fan clutch: received face down in the box, with arrows on the side of the box pointing up. At least for this manufacturer, it’s okay to ship the fan clutch facing down. No leakage was evident.

Fan clutch install: new bolts and lock washers came with the fan clutch. I placed the fan clutch face down on my workbench, and placed the fan on it. Install the 4 bolts and lock washers per instructions at 15 – 18 foot-pounds, ½ short socket, 10 inch extension, 3/8 torque wrench.

A sleeve comes with the 2747 fan clutch.

Because the pilot on the Mopar water pump hub is 5/8 inch and the opening for the pilot at the back of the fan clutch is ¾ inch, this sleeve has to be installed in the back of the fan clutch for it to center properly on the pilot of the water pump.
Test fit

I used a block of wood and a rubber mallet to tap the sleeve into the back of the fan clutch, narrowing the pilot area to give a snug & centered fit on the 5/8 inch water pump pilot.

After installing the fan clutch, I placed assembly on top of the cabinet and leaned it against the wall so that the front of the fan clutch was vertical. The only acceptable storage positions are front down and vertical!

When you say "facing down", please elaborate. Do you mean that the spring (front) side was face down in the box and the shaft sticking up? If so, that would be the correct positioning that we've been discussing regarding storage. The clutch will leak out the shaft (water pump) side, not the spring side.

Anyway, congrats on a good repair. That should work just fine for another 30 years....

So if I stored it spring side down with the shaft sticking up and it leaks out the spring side anyway I need to replace it right?

Your clutch leaked while positioned like that? If so, yes...you need the correct amount of the viscous oil in there so the shaft can drive the fan properly. Was it new or a used clutch?

And that's surprising. The seal for small shaft that the spring rotates (probably not more than 90* is my guess) is much more "seal-y" than the typical lip seal on the shaft.

It sure did, couple of drops. Had the it stored when I changed my timing chain. Definitely used, probably still the original clutch.

Yeah, I figured it was used, and that seal has loosened a bit over time. It wouldn't have leaked a drop if it was stored vertically, and it would have REALLY leaked if you had the shaft end down. :(

As for needing to replace it....a few drops probably won't affect its performance much. I'm sure you'll keep your eye on temps.

FYI, I had my car out today for a 60 mile joyride in 90* heat, AC on, running about 210* at highway speeds, a little higher at stoplights.

Facing down means spring side down. IOW, the side that faces forward when installed, was facing the bottom of the box when it was shipped. Arrows from bottom of box pointed up. To Amazon's credit, not a drop had leaked.

Ahhh! Thanks for that, as it confirms what several of us were discussing/describing at the beginning of your post.

I guess Jeff Bezos knows a lot about fan clutches!
