1973 Chrysler imperial lebaron
I checked out this Imperial with full intent to buy. After looking at in person, not going to buy now. Triple black fuselage Imperial coupe is a unicorn! This one needs some long lasting love.
First off, the sellers (son + elderly father) are honest straight shooters. I have no affiliation. I did not talk to them about price. I may be first to check it out. If you want more details, DM me. Description and pics follow.
This one is a true rainy Pacific Northwest 140,000-mile 70's survivor. A survivor of another sort. It's been kept alive, thankfully, and reminds me of many old cars I used to see on dealer lots in the 80's. Current owner bought from a dealer in 1990's. Owner is a big Imperial lover. It's been parked since 2001, in current owner's garage mostly. Prior to the dealer selling the car in the 90's, the car was painted white, a new vinyl top was installed and appears to be a new headliner. And this is where the description begins.
- There are numerous spots where rust is coming through the paint.
- Under the white paint, can see repairs with Bondo in the typical rusty spots. Can also see lacquer paint checking, from previous repairs to the black paint. Some dents painted over, epically a large crease on bottom of passenger door.
- Paint job is Earl Scheib quality. Light coat of paint. Poor masking. Sandpaper marks on trim. Overspray. White paint may have been chose to hide flaws. Ran a magnet over some of the surface and noticed more Bondo from this.
- The top has significant rust bubbling under it, and also delaminating from some spots. However, there is no typical rust seen at the lower corners of the rear window. All the bubbling is away from this. These corners are not smooth. Guessing repairs were made here. Heavy staining from water intrusion on package shelf correlates with vinyl top bubbling. Rear window molding painted black, possibly to hide sanding marks.
- Headliner replaced. Pillows and factory panel from above rear seat gone and replaced with a cover. Some mold or staining on the new headliner (all installed prior to current owner). Oddly, white sun visors installed while rest of headliner and interior are black.
- Here is the strangest thing I've seen in awhile: Steering column is canted to one side and upwards. Steering wheel noticeably closer to seat than normal. Owner explained steering column assy is from a New Yorker. For some reason, it was installed when repairing something with the steering system. Perhaps the coupler used in repair or steering box are from another car, and the Imperial assy did not fit? Flex coupler not fully engaged on steering shaft splines, I saw. Odd.
- Power seats do not work. Somebody disabled controls in doors and installed New Yorker switches at seat base. Seating surfaces are OK and slightly supple. Back of seat has heavy water staining or mold and ersatz wood cracked from shrinking.
- All but one power windows work, all very slowly.
- AutoTemp2 with rear AC. Seems to constantly blow warm to hot defrost air. Fan speed changes when on max. A/C compressor will not run. Rear A/C blower functions at both speeds. Servo has cracks. No signs of ATC vacuum plumbing or wiring being tampered with. No signs of heater core leaks.
- Has General Motors wheels, slightly wider than stock. Owner installed so could accommodate 255/70/15 rubber. Tire tread depth looks new but are ancient and cracked.
- Some signs of collision repair at rear most panel in trunk. I did not inspect undercarriage closely, but did not see any structural corrosion. New fuel tank and pickup from Vans.
- Has starter switch, relay or solenoid issues. May have bad tooth on engine FW. Starts and runs like a tired 440. Goes into gear. I chose to not drive. Looks mostly stock but some smog stuff disabled. Brake booster needs to be replaced (vacuum leak).
- Headlight doors and lamps work. Wiper motor works. Buzzers work. Radio works. Fixed antenna replaced OEM telescopic. Has 8-tracks in glove box but did not play.
- Missing or loose interior and exterior trim in spots. Other old car stuff like knobs falling falling off, remote rearview mirrors not working, remote mirror knob broken and so on.
Bottom line, if somebody is willing to spend significant amount of time/money on body work, plus deal with ATC, Headliner issues, electrical gremlins ... this could be a good starting point. Triple black fuselage coupes are so awesome. Hopefully somebody with the time and money to burn can bring this one back to it's glory.
