Yes, I noticed the hood has a "blotchy" look. At first I thought maybe the birds had some target practice.

Whiskey Blister - would be apt for that part of the NC mountains - Sylva is about an hour west of Asheville. Nice little town, not too far from Western Carolina Univ.
