1978 New Yorker w/o St. Regis

I've noticed that it seems most if not all of the formal New Yorker coupes on this forum have the St. Regis roof package. With that being said I have came across locally a traditional hardtop coupe with the sunroof. Would this '78 New Yorker be a oddity? I have seen a few Newport posts with the standard roof but rarely a New Yorker.

I'm considering taking a closer look at her. Owner says it needs some TLC.

Not the best color combination and the overall effect is that it looks cheaper than a Newport. It badly needs at least some whitewalls and some more interesting wheel covers.

i wouldnt call it an oddity because of the regular roof.
its missing the rocker panel trim and has newport wheel covers too.
when it was repainted they put the stripes on the upper body, not the lower.....
do they have the skirts ?
really needs whitewalls & roadwheels, it looks cheap as is.....

White , Red or Black body color would improve the presentation 110%. Gotta have skirts too.

I like the color and the top. To me, that's a cleaner look than the St. Regas style top.

To actually answer your question: The standard roof New Yorker coupes are far less common than ones equipped with the St. Regis top. I'd say they built something like 15-20 St. Regis coupes for every standard coupe. I doubt that Chrysler has any breakdown for the production numbers, since the St Regis roof was just an option, and not a different model. The sunroof on a standard coupe is quite rare, but I have seen one before. Rare or not, it's not a worthwhile endeavor to sink a lot of money and time into a formal if it's in rough shape. Some minor rust in the quarters isn't a deal breaker, but if the interior is rough with tattered seats and split door panels, it's just too expensive to fix that stuff unless you have a parts car that has all that you need. Also be wary of rust around the roof just above the drip rail and rust in the cowl. Check under the dash for signs of water leakage, as the cowls will rot through on the interior side and flood the car with water when it rains.

I'd seriously consider researching this car. I'd remove the vinyl and have an extremely unique NY.

I'd agree with Big_John in that the "plain" roof is sleeker/cleaner than otherwise; and the way this one has red (burgundy) that matches the interior IS nice. The addition (or deletion) of skirts REALLY changes the look on these. This one seems to be calling for them, and road wheels (or something similar) would really dress it up. Lots of potential here.

Got some decent info from seller. Yes the skirts are in the trunk. Only the driver side wiper works.( passenger side disconnected) Not for sure if the Lean Burn is still hooked up to the 440. Pretty typical Minnesota cancer in lower quarters and the drivers side quarter is puckered.
I just hope I can work out a time to check this out before a derbier gets wind. Wondering what this would look like with a set of Torq Thrusts.

I know where you can get this entire interior in plush (crushed velvet??) red instead of leather, if you pick this up and that appeals to you.

Just realized that they got rid of the halo vinyl top for 1978. Never noticed that before. Probably a cost reduction, plus it will make it impossible to check for rust over the drip rail. They will rust in the painted strip between the drip rail and vinyl from the inside out.

Their are several very, very soft subtle grades of vinyl that are more durable than leather....and just as easy to work with I've been told and have seen for myself.

Like it was trying to be something it isn't... but not the biggest crime ever committed... DO NOT go for scoops or stripes, then we'd just HAVE to make fun of your car.

I suppose these days a set of TTs is cheaper than a nice set of Road Wheels...

Very nice! I'm guessing that they are for the sunroof car. That has a parchment interior, not white?
