I would start with the carb fuel/air adjustment. Maybe you are running a little rich. Do you have electric or manual choke. Sometimes the manual choke cable isn't adjusted properly. I set the cable so it is has an 1/8" gap between the dash and the base of the choke cable handle so I know the choke is completely open when the cable is pushed all the way in. What do you have engine timimg set at?
Yeah, that's what the inspection results said, I'm running too rich....one of these tries I'll get it right. I have an electric choke on my carburetor (Ebrock AVS 650cfm) which I like much better than a manual one for obvious reasons.
As far as the timing goes I don't know....at least numerical wise. I myself haven't had a timing gun on her since I got her back from the speed shop where she had work done (sounds like botox visit, haha), but I know those guys did. I had them throw in a lot of nice mopar goodies on the top end and I think they timed her just right. The other day when it was really warm outside (88-89 degrees), I drove around all day without getting any detonation esp. while under somewhat vigorous acceleration (merging, going uphill) AND on cheesy regular unleaded gasoline, but I see where you going with that and I guess I could take some timing out it to see if there is any improvement in gas mileage.
