383 Exhaust Manifold Question

Thank you to 413 for the picture of the manifold with the Heat Riser. That gave me the info I needed to figure out that my heat riser was frozen in the closed position. I'd been soaking the heat riser mechanism with PB Blaster and was about ready to drop the exhaust pipe to get to it, but I was finally able to get it loosened up without taking it apart. YAY!

One is the stop for the travel. One is the pivot shaft for the heat riser. It can leak there, it is a shaft and bushings with no seals.

Move it up and down and see if it’s loose, or rattling. Carefully feel around it with a cold engine running to see if you can feel exhaust leaking out. Don’t burn your hand exhaust system heats up real fast. Don’t do this on a hot engine.

Thank you for this. It has cleared up a lot of confusion.
