383 Fuel Pump replacement - are there tricks?

ed whats the status on the rubber connecto bits of the fuel line? there is one at the tank - dont loose the ground clip -
there is one near the passenger door underside going into frame -
there is one coming off frame to the fuel pump - and where the fuel filter should be -
and may be more bits of rubber line here and there if its been hacked on.

go to vatozone and buy 10' of fuel injected rated fuel line - dont go cheap here buy the good stuff - and change all the rubber bits along the entire fuel path..

try not to die -

- saylor

and i dunno about putting your thumb on the pushrod and bumping the motor over that sounds like a good way yo get a smushed thumb or hung up in the side of the engine maybe im doing it wrong

when it died what died? you just stopped getting fuel? you got gas in the oil? no one asked the good questions they just told you take half your car apart, and get a thermostat. only martin the first post that everyone ignored lol.

Put the pump body in a vise, connect 2 rubber hoses, one on a jam jar of fuel and activate the arm, it will come out like a Tom cat pissing if its good. Easy stuff first.....then, fit B1 heads, sheet metal intake, 2 1050 Dominators if that dont work...LOL Good luck Man i'm only jivin'

....GARLAND TX, looong time since I was there, loved it, pissed up in Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas, jump in my friends 68 conv BB Newport and go racing up the Interstate, magical back in the 90's.
My mate still lives there today

First lost the acceleration, then the engine stalled. Just exactly the same as when my truck pump died. I just replaced the bits of rubber hose under the hood because I had gas smell. Filter too. All last summer. I did not replace at the tank, but then again I have no gas smell or dripping in the garage, so I doubt they are leaking. Probably could use'a changin' tho!!

The hose won’t leak fuel from the inside out so much as they will suck air from the outside in causing starvation.

couldn’t help it, Snoopy is one of my favorites

I just replaced mine last weekend. I removed the plug that holds the rod in and just held it up with a small long screw driver. Slipped the pump in and removed the screw driver. Better access from below.

I've got a question, how did you remove that pushrod plug from the block? I'm trying to inspect my pushrod but the plug is seized in place.

I'm guessing some heat & torch action?

Oh and looks like previously somebody else was trying to access the pushrod to no avail as the allen key plug is partially stripped.

Thanks.

If you use heat make sure you have no fuel in the area and your fuel lines are isolated and away from your heat. Have a fire extinguisher close by. They can be a bugger if someone started with the wrong size. Some times if you can get a file in the flats and get some corners back, you can possibly find a metric size that is a hair bigger than the standard size. Seat it in tightly, sometimes an impact driver can help seat the Allen head driver and give it a slight turn with each hit.

Thanks for the response, I got it out yesterday, I let the plug soak for about 2 days in penetrant fluid.

heated the plug up with a torch til maroon red, then while it was hot I sprayed the plug down with penetrant, then took an allen key and hit one end of the hey with an open palm.

(I was acting as the impact driver)

Then it came loose, thank god.

Thanks for the reply again!
